Baltimore Mayor Pugh says crime 'out of control,' orders agencies to meet with police every morning

Calling violence in Baltimore "out of control," Mayor Catherine Pugh ordered 30 agency heads to meet every morning at police headquarters, and to make crime reduction the top mission not only of police, but also of health workers, housing officials and public works crews.

The mayor ordered the directors of more than half of the city’s 55 departments to report to meetings daily at 8 a.m., when they will plan with Police Commissioner Kevin Davis where weeds should be cut, lead paint covered and drug houses boarded up and job applications can be handed out, among other tasks.

"Violence in the city is out of control," she said. "I want every neighborhood to know I am extremely concerned and focused on reducing violence."

Killings in the city have surged past 300 this year for a third year in a row. Violent crime is up 13 percent over last year, and reports of groups of youths attacking people apparently at random have dominated recent local news cycles.

Clearly it is beyond time that the city finally enact some gun control laws.

It’s right up there with “weed cutting”.

Sounds like a solid plan...

Rolling eyes...

Donut sales should sky rocket...

I do have to give her kudo for at least trying instead of blaming the evil white man who runs the city...

Oh. WAIT...

It’s the broken windows syndrome, the addressing of which had some good effects in NYC.

As to this, getting agency heads involved is a novel idea and shows original thinking. I hope some good comes of it.

That said, throwing police under the bus, which she has done, is the singular worst move she could have made. What I expect is this experiment will roll on for a while, produce no results, and be quietly abandoned.

Black culture’s gimmedat isn’t going to be improved by this. Baltimore may be beyond help. But like Lucy van Pelt says, “No problem is too big to be run away from.”

Violence against a police officer used to carry a stiffer sentence than violence against a civilian. Killing a cop used to carry a mandatory death penalty.

The theory was, anybody that would commit a crime like that against a police officer was more dangerous than any other. Police represent society in that respect. "Disrespecting" police means you have no regard for society and he who will attack a cop is far more likely to harm civilians.

By diminishing cops and making them the enemy, you give license to unlawful behavior and society breaks down.

This is really very simple stuff. The mayor, and all politicisns like her, represent the enemies of civilization/society. It is no wonder Baltimore and other urban centers resemble "Escape from New York."

Crime only got out of control when Trump was elected. (Though Trump would likely provide common sense support if asked nicely.)

It’s the broken windows syndrome

Broken windows theory must include enforcing infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies alike. It is not so much about "fixing windows" as about addressing the small things to effect the big things.

"Stop and frisk" was part of the broken windows philosophy of policing, for example.

“The mayor’s office will hang the police out to dry in a second. I’m sure they’re dragging their feet, doing the bare minimum so as not to open themselves up to more problems.”

Same thing happening in Seattle, which used to be one of the most beautiful cities in the country, which is now overrun by homeless addicts and an ever-increasing gang problem. The Mayor and City Council despise the police and never miss an opportunity to criticize them, and the City prosecutor declines to prosecute almost every case put before them! Add to that the DOJ consent decree which is still in effect even though SPD has met every benchmark and you have a discouraged, tired, overwhelmed, understaffed police department and a city falling apart...sad to look at Baltimore and see the future of Seattle! :’(

In 35 years of attending meetings in various companies, I think that perhaps only 10% accomplished anything. Most work is done outside of meetings. Meetings are mostly to brief management on what is going on. They interfere with accomplishing tasks as they tie up the very people needed to do those tasks. An effective meeting requires a written agenda, an action item list and meeting minutes. (I always volunteered to take the minutes and update the actions. That way, regardless of what was “accomplished” I got what I needed done worked on.)

The mayor may find that the meeting is against various laws and codes. For example, can a state or local intelligence agency share their undercover ops? Would they want to? (If I was undercover, the answer would be no.)

The mayor, who is the problem, is looking for a lot of sound and fury to make it appear they are doing something, when, in fact, the cop’s hands are tied.

Today Baltimore, Chicago, and Detroit. Before long these hellholes will begin to merge: Detroit and Chicago. Baltimore and Washington. California is fast becoming a hellhole. Then the hellholes will grow ever larger until the entire USA is one violent, crime infested hellhole:

UNLESS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WAKE UP FAST!

I was at a meeting and asked,

“If this is important enough to have a meeting, then shouldn’t it be important enough to keep a record of the meeting?”

I received a memo that afternoon notifying me that my attendance was no longer required at these meetings.
