Doing nothing, Trump may witness US goal in Mugabe's ouster

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Without lifting a finger, the Trump administration may be witnessing the culmination of nearly two decades of U.S. efforts to pry Zimbabwe from the powerful grasp of its authoritarian President Robert Mugabe. Yet with Mugabe's fate and Zimbabwe's political future in limbo, neither Trump nor previous administrations can claim credit or celebrate.

The past three American leaders have actively and outspokenly sought to isolate Mugabe and his ruling clique for human rights abuses, hoping to encourage a democratic transition. Since January, however, it's been virtual crickets. Now the 93-year-old is under house arrest with his rule nearing an end, a victim not of U.S. and Western pressure but of domestic infighting.

No. Actually it was instigated by veteran freedom fighters who backed Mugabe, but as they saw his wife attempting a take over, decided to stop it.
She is unpopular.
And the army guys discussed it with China before they acted, and China gave an ok.
Not even my anti American friends there are blaming the CIA.
Given past British meddling, and given their mineral resources, I would not be surprised if they meddled, but since the military are commies and support Mugabes policies, it sounds more like infighting so far to stop his wife's political ambitions

The problem now is South Africa’s meddling.

Read post 19 and see what Zimbabwe’s role has been in the war on terror. Bobby was dropping the ball big time in fulfilling his obligations because of the power struggles going on. Remember that China is an ally in the war against Islamic terrorism too. I suspect it was brought about by the major players.

And in turn Samuel Doe was overthrown, and they first cut off his ears as a reminder that he was a poor listener. Africa is and always will be “The Dark Continent “.

” Shortly after the coup, government ministers were walked publicly around Monrovia in the nude and then summarily executed by a firing squad on the beach.”

Heard a lot worse than that, regarding Mr. Doe.

The down and dirty - the old guard has been running the country and milking it for everything it had since the revolution.

The wife is leader of the younger generation that wants to get on the same gravy train - by kicking the old guard out and becoming their replacements.

By sacking the VP (old guard) the wife solidified her position as the next leader of the country. The old guard, which includes the military leadership, saw this as a direct threat to their power and so has stepped in.

Bottom line - nothing is going to change for the little people.

This is very true but it does not change the fact that the big powers have a strong stake in the region because of the war on terror and they will take appropriate measures to stabilize the situation and put into power those who will make sure that those strategic objectives are being met. Consider how we backed Saddam early when the Shah was overthrown. This situation is no different.

You need to understand that their domestic situation instability has a huge impact on the current global security situation for the region. The concerns about it are covered by both the State Department and the Counter-Terrorism think tank.

Ya’ know, sometimes the simple answer is right - no matter how bad somebody wants a conspiracy.

So how much time you got in Africa?

It’s not a conspiracy as these are facts and its the way things have done for along time in this nation’s foreign policy.

I agree with you. They may, indeed, find themselves saddled with someone worse. It’s their own fault, of course, so not much sympathy anymore than I have sympathy for Venezuelans.

So the old guard is willing to step aside for the greater good?

Looks to me like the old guard is doing things to keep their hold on power.

KISS

“Bottom line - nothing is going to change for the little people.”

Politically, very true.

They do have economic opportunities though.

The gist of it, is that almost anything would be an improvement over Mugabe. Even though they have the same ruling clique, they have a great opportunity to try a bit of re-branding, or roll out some new policies. They could have a sot at some sanctions relief, if they play their cards right.

I would guess that their Chinese overlords should have a few business ideas as well.

Although it would be really hard to do worse than Mugabe, if anyone could, it would be the Zanu-PF Party (which will remain in control).

You mean like Castro, rocketman, Madura, the Ayatollahs? Yeah, that old CIA does great work.

Cathy Buckle hasn’t posted since Nov 10, just prior to the recent upwelling. If the web isn’t censored, she’ll be reporting in from Zimbabwe through the eyes of a Mugabe apologist. Should be good.
