Membership in a club, marksmanship activity, proof of citizenship, that's all standard for the CMP; But having to get one through a FFL, fill out the yellow form, that's new, and may make it not worth it.
But it was big news that CMP might get some 1911s, everyone here, including me was excited about it, but if this is how they're going to do it, I don't know.
Meanwhile there are something like 60,000 Garands languishing in South Korea...

Yeah, I'll have to check my member card to see when it expires - IIRC I scanned it and e-mailed it to CMP showing current membership.
I'm glad they're doing all these sales by mail order. A few years ago, they had a bunch of M1 Carbines for sale, but they all sold through the retail store locations in just a few hours. Lots of irate posts in the member forums.

Join the Garand Collectors Association to satisfy club membership. $25 per year.
Former LEO, military DD-214 or active duty, carry license, 03 C&R FFL, hunter safety course with live fire will qualify for marksmanship activity.

...Who would want to buy a rusty old rattletrap 1911 that has been through hell and back when you can just go buy a brand new Glock..
Through hell and back? Fighting Philippine rebels. Pancho Villa. The trenches of WWI, The South Pacific Islands and the European theatre in WWII, Korea, Vietnam? And protection of American bases worldwide till replaced?
To hell and back? Yes, history. That’s why.

2) proof of membership in a CMP affiliated club, 3) proof of participation in a marksmanship activity, See, that's a pain in the azz. Why isn't a CCW good enough?
Good to see you sax!

It's a lot hoops to jump through.
CMP membership = $25
It looks like you have to pay for TWO NCIS background checks. Around here cheapest transfers are $40 x 2 = $80
Lots of way to get the marksmanship. CCW, over 60, military/LEO, etc.
Unknown price/quality, you may not even get drawn. That's $65 down the drain.
To: CA_soon_gone
No one pays for NICs checks!
Besides taxpayers

Maybe it’s a nod to the reason for which they were established.

When I first heard CMP was thinking about doing this, I looked at their lists and made sure my paperwork would be squared away. CCW does count. And Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (Dudley Brown notwithstanding) counts. Colorado State Shooting Association also counts.
Always good to see you.

That’s nice, I do a bit of marksmanship training in the forest. But that isn’t sanctioned.
