Around here the dealer does the check when you do the transfer. CCW counts for nothing. Without a transfer it may cost less but I was charged something like $20 by the sheriff to get my permit. At any rate for me it will be a non-zero cost in addition to the transfer cost with no guarantee of anything.

$25? $35 dollars for 5 years as a Vet?
Pretty cheap

I’ve looked at this before and these appear to be show stoppers for me: 2) proof of membership in a CMP affiliated club, 3) proof of participation in a marksmanship activity

Unless things have changed, the real show-stopper is going to be the asking price.

I went to the CMP website. Joining a club is basically a shakedown.

Pay $25 and “join” the M1 Garand Collector’s Club.
Marksmanship is just about any gun class and yes, CCW counts.

Yes, I don’t see why anyone but a collector would want a worn and rattly
old .45. They are not decent target pistols unless refurbished.

When I was a kid my dad would go to the Navy surplus sales. He used to complain that you had to pay first and they would then hand you an M1 Carbine in whatever condition they picked up. Some were great, others beat. They cost $15. No paperwork. This current process doesn’t in any way remind me of freedom.

I’ve looked at this before and these appear to be show stoppers for me:
2) proof of membership in a CMP affiliated club, 3) proof of participation in a marksmanship activity

Both requirements are easy to meet.

If you're a vet and belong to the VFW , American Legion, etc. that's all you need.

If not and you need membership in a CMP affiliated Club you can join the M1 Collectors Club for $14.

If you are 60 years of age or older, a vet or law enforcement officer you don't need any other proof of marksmanship activity.
If not, documented proof of any activity that included live fire training or shooting is sufficient.
Like a CCW class or hunter safety class as examples.

Even organized airgun shooting can qualify you.

A Rock Island Armory from PI is probably more accurate..

Maybe but the m45a1 is plenty accurate for a combat weapon. As far as reliability and long term use for sure there is no other out of the box 1911 I would take over the current Colt M45A1. It is however a $1600 handgun so many others can be had for a lot less.

My point about the M45A1 is for those who would like to have a modern military 1911 you can get one now without all the CMP hassle and it comes brand spanking new, is dead nuts reliable and good for thousands of rounds.

Might be some decent ones in the lots - I have a 1911 that was manufactured in 1914 in the Springfield Armory - collector’s item but a sweet shooter even today.

Thanks for the info. I thought I had done the research but apparently my research skills were lacking. I am retired military, ex-LEO, and have concealed carry permit so I meet most of the requirements. Just have to join a club. Thanks again.

Sounds like you are just about good to go.

Your DD-214 meets your marksmanship requirement.

As far as joining a club, CMP has an affiliate club with a $25 membership fee.
The good thing about that one is you can give them permission to transfer your membership info directly to CMP.
When you join up you are quickly registered as a member with CMP witout having to wait for your membership card.
