WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson offered on Tuesday to begin direct talks with North Korea without pre-conditions, backing away from U.S. demands that Pyongyang must first accept that any negotiations would have to be about giving up its nuclear arsenal.
While reiterating Washingtons long-standing position that it cannot tolerate a nuclear-armed North Korea, Tillerson said the United States was ready to talk any time theyre ready to talk, but that there would first have to be a period of quiet without nuclear and missile tests...

Oops. I meant to say “direct negotiations” not “direct conditions”.
Distorted news to make it look like they are “backing down” or something.
Neither obama or hillary would sit down and have talks with North Korea. They would just fill a plane with cash and apologize.
I think Tillerson is simply making sure that NK and the rest of the world know we’re ready to talk, but some things must precede any discussions. Then when Rocket Boy again ignores us, that we have shown the world that negotiations are impossible, paving the way for a preemptive strike if NK doesn’t stop all launching and testing.
Then there’s this business of the “refugee preparations” just across the Yalu River in China. I think China knows where this is going already.
A little good cop bad cop?
Best (improbable) case is that China has operatives close to Rocket Man getting ready to solve the problem in a singular and personal sort of way.
Realistically, it would appear that they're getting ready to manage refugees,
The NeoCons lost this round. The Norks won
thankfully - we need to stop drinking neocon koolaid
I think with this statement Tillerson is out on a limb by himself.
That has never been US Policy. And I’m betting it’s not Trump’s policy either.
I believe Trump will either fire him, or publicly rebuke him.
No. No. No.
N.K. demands direct U.S.-N.K only negotiations, without South Korea, because N.K. does not accept the legitimacy of the government of the South Korea. To the N.K. South Korea is just a “puppet”.
It is wrong for the U.S. to have U.S.-N.K direct talks, that exclude South Korea. Do so gives legitimacy to the N.K. claim that the U.S. and U.S. alone can make peace with N.K. It cannot not. Doing so will only endanger South Korea.
If Tillerson is really thinking of doing this, because that’s what the “professionals” at Foggy Bottom want to do, Trump should fire him.
I may be misremembering, but I think NK has wanted direct talks with the US for the last fifty years. The US has refused to talk directly without SK and China being present as it would appear to legitimize the NK regime. So now NK gets it for free, as a reward for breaking every accord that tried to restrict their nuclear development. Or maybe I’m in error. It won’t be the first time. Anyone remember differently?
What is it about the State Department? It seems to be a nest of pacifists run by a Liberal. And not just this Administration either.
You are correct.
The problem with the State Department is they think their job is to represent other countries to the US, not the US to other countries. Trump needs to rewrite Foggy Bottom’s mission statement.
Unfortunately, there is little other option. Unless there is some way to immediately neutralize the 10,000 artillery pieces aimed at Seoul, there is little that can be done to N.K. short of a nuclear strike. What Tillerson has done was basically inevitable (said the same last year, way before Tillerson was in the picture), and I am sure he did not do that with President Trumps cognizance.
Showing the world that Little Kim is being given every chance for a peaceful solution....his fate is in his own hands.......
“Unfortunately, there is little other option. Unless there is some way to immediately neutralize the 10,000 artillery pieces aimed at Seoul, there is little that can be done to N.K. short of a nuclear strike.”
I disagree. They can be “imploded” as long a the U.S. and South Korea keep getting backing for international sanctions, do nothing to weaken that, and give N.K. no rewards just for “talking”. If both parties agree to constant increasing sanctions, no gifts or compromises, until N.K. not merely promises to, but actually climbs down off it’s nuclear ambitions. time is on the side of an implosion. China will not rescue it, and as long as the allies to not act first China will not rescue it.
Yes, the N.K. artillery will be bad, but as long as it is a N.K. “first strike” they will be on their own and lose, completely when the dust settles. That leaves only an implosion, which I think everyone but the Kims in North Korea will accept when it hits.
