Thank you. This is a terrible blow to everyone, especially the family.

Well, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
On zooming way in, the ‘yellow colored, delta shaped things’ on/along the tracks appear to my eyes to be first responders, of one sort or another, wearing yellow and orange jackets.

People will always get distracted.

Why was there no positive speed control? GPS is everywhere and computers are cheap. The track can be mapped and speed computer controlled based on location.

This same question was asked after the Philadelphia derailment. Govt. agency is kind of slow, right?

But only if you live in Oregon or Washington State. They are the ones that contracted AMTRAK to operate the Cascade.
If you live in CA or GA or ME, your off the hook for this one.

Delayed implementation till next year. PTC is not cheap and the reason for delay was the cost to private rail. A competent train engineer is the best way to avoid these situations.

Thanks for the info.

I am a competent driver of automobiles. I actually transport strangers, and none have asked to be let out immediately. :)

However, I miss speed limit signs all the time. Wouldn’t this also be easy for the train engineer, or are there terrain cues that are sufficient to give the train engineer time to decelerate?

I’ll be honest here and say I think there is a coverup going on. WSP would be negligent if they do not IMMEDIATELY arrest the engineer and conductor.
Not saying necessarily that they are guilty of anything, but you need them in protective custody at least.

Anybody else think that maybe Amtrak bigwigs said to them “Just let er rip... try to set the record for travel time...”...

Won’t be the first time. At all.

Trains have been running on that curve for a hundred years. How many derailments have occurred?

I don’t understand your point. There are bridges and trestles and Interstates up and down the east, west, north and south. The Northeast corridor has hundreds of curves, bridges and tunnels with track speeds up to 150 mph and as low as 20 mph along with slow commuter and freight trains. The only accidents that have happened in the last couple of years on the northeast corridor where all caused by incompetent engineers some of who were high on drugs. This accident will have the same conclusion.

NTSB is the governing body and not Amtrak. The engineer will clam-up as directed by his union lawyer.

Seems like Amtrak has a training problem in the Seattle area. 2 derailments in 6 months.

It took 3 days to release the the Philadelphia Amtrak derailed engineer’s name.

I don’t understand your point.

The interstates have not been around for 100 years...

On a side note...
