For those who may ask,
Rounder is defined as someone who is frequently drunk or shows immoral or improper conduct. An example of a rounder is an alcoholic.
Have the lawsuits started yet?
And when they do, can you guess who’s going to be paying for the settlements?
A full-weight engine doing 80 where it should be 30 could push right thru the track. That track is built mostly to hold the train from going _down_, not so much to force it to turn left. You’re looking at a horizontal force about 3x the expected load.
Yeah, maybe the track was weakened or obstructed at that point deliberately. Maybe it’s a freak coincidence that the train was going too fast as well (multiple unrelated causes sometimes, rarely, happen at once).
I’m of the Occam’s Razor persuasion: the simple explanation is usually right. If the train data recorder says it was doing 80 in a 30 turn, that’s the most likely reason it derailed.
I’m unpersuaded by small misunderstandings within the subsequent wreckage being indication of grand vicious conspiracies playing out when pretty much the same results would occur _without_ conspiracy.
“Driving that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better watch your speed”
The Ann Coulter rule for naming the engineer of this ill fated train is in effect.
The rule states that the longer it takes until we find out the name and details of the engineer who is responsible for this deadly deed the less likely it will be found to be a white male.
Another instance of engineer texting when he should have been paying attention to his controls?
I count 13 cars.
If the train WAS going 80 at that point; slamming the air brakes on would create a lot of sparks, but I doubt that the most of the train would have stayed on the tracks!
I’m going to guess that later investigations will reveal something more than speed was involved.
I think Elsie’s question was why didn’t the lead locomotive tip over. My only guess is that it was too fast for that. It derailed before it even got into the curve, probably shearing off the undercarriage.
Perhaps. Yesterday (beyond the Earth First/AntiFa articles of similar tactics) were reports of something on the tracks. What is unclear.
And what of the bullet trains that would travel even faster (and be prone to such deadly attacks)?
Fortunately the train has a data recorder, hopefully with a lot of parameters. The readout from that may prove helpful.
If you look at the route map, this is the only sharp radius curve of the entire trip. The train driver should have been aware of that.
Looking at the picture, it looks like the lead loco didn’t even start to turn. The path in the dirt goes straight right where the tracks start to turn left.
Derailment is a reminder of what happened in Philadelphia/New Jersey 2 years ago...
Amtrak train derailment draws comparisons to Philadelphia Amtrak derailment in 2015
Looks like the heavy locomotive made it thru the turn, the lighter passenger cars were not so lucky. The engineer driving is in big trouble as he should be. One would think the speed of the train could be automated (with a manual over ride).
"Wreck Of The Old '97"
Johnny Cash
They gave him his orders at Monroe Virginia'
Sayin' "Steve you're way behind time.
This is not 38 this is old 97
You must put her into Spencer on time."
Well he turned around and said to his big greasy fireman,
"Hey, shovel on a little more coal.
And when we cross that Ol' White Mountain,
Watch ol' 97 roll."
It's a mighty rough road from Lynchburg to Danville,
In a line on a three mile grade.
It was on that grade that he lost his air brake,
You can see what a jump he made.
He was goin' down the grade makin' 90 miles an hour,
When his whistle broke into a scream.
He was found in the wreck with his hand on the throttle,
Scalded to death by the steam.
Now all you ladies you best take a warnin',
From this time on and learn,
Never speak harsh words to your true love or husband,
He may leave you and never return.
Are trains’ speeds managed by an engineer in the train or are they done via computer, like auto pilot?
“Amtrak exists for one reason: the Acela service”
I thought it was a make-work program for minorities.
Amtrak should be privatized.
HUH??
Amtrak is the result of the Federal Government taking over a Private Rail company that was bankrupt and disbanding. Look it up!
The Acela service has gotten ridiculously expensive - significantly more than airfare for some runs.
If the engineer was speeding, 3 guesses why.
Ill take affirmative action hire for $1000, please.
I might get yelled at here but, you’re probably almost right - I heard the Scanner chatter yesterday on the news and it was a woman who was calling in - yup - probably a woman driver - did they put her there on the virgin passenger run because of PC? What on earth made her drive 50mph over designated limit? Did anxiety kick in?
Just sayin’
