While I am pretty much a pacifist and a peacemaker, I can see this unfolding into reality. Had Trump not turned the tide, it would be much sooner.
Most major cities that are liberal baskins are at the intersections of rivers, or where rivers enter the bays or oceans. This makes it relatively easy to block strategically by taking out a few bridges.
It would not be long before the cities would be in the same predicament as North Korea right now... NO FOOD. And the people in the cities would turn on themselves.
I would not want to live in a major city under any circumstances.
The secondary question with major importance would be... does the Federal Government still exist and who is in charge of the weapons? The answer to this question would most likely determine the length and size of any rebellion.
It is my expectation that a natural disaster could or would be a part of this battle. Imagine what CA would look like if there were a team of arsonists... They would be toast.
No electricity in major cities... especially in peak winter or summer.... The snowflakes would melt.
Municipal waste and water treatment facilities... gone..
Long term survival would be based upon the ability to build strong communities that work together.
Us redneck hillbillies would survive! If not.. I don’t really care anyway. I refuse to allow fear to shackle me.
I think a civil war might be triggered by something like an EMP or nuclear attack, or some sort of widespread natural disaster or disasters. If normal life is disrupted for any length of time, over large areas, we will see roving gangs of thugs which may eventually coalesce around political ideology. Conflict would spread outwards from the major cities.

Whether war is hell or not is beside the point. As with North Korea, it is inevitable. Sadly, Civil War II is unlikely to end in utter victory for either side, but settle down into an armed standoff lasting until everyone left is too exhausted to fight.
I grew up very poor, pretty much living off the land, hunting, fishing, chopping wood and carrying water... Could do it again if need be....

I think that was the mood of both North and South by the time the Late Unpleasantness of 1861-1865 started. Not really wanting it though,but everyone, it seemed, expect ed it to happen for years and wanted to get it done and over with.
Air power will dictate which side(s) wins a CW-2.
I think the people will get sick of the Federal Leviathan and just leave the union. It is the simplest solution.

We came just fractions of an inch of the war turning hot during the Bundy Ranch standoff. People do not realize how close we were to going to war. In my opinion had just one shot been fired, every one of the federal agents there would have been cut down where they stood by a line of heavily armed American Patriots. At that point we would have been at war and it would have spread so fast it could not be stopped. Luckily cooler heads prevailed and the feds backed down and retreated.
We were that close.
In a real CW scenario, they'd by outnumbered by a series of magnitudes and completely overwhelmed by shear numbers in the opposition.
Btw, there on more trained veterans on the streets of the U.S., than exist in all the services.☺
Roll all up into one singular event ...... the depression era , 9-11, Katrina, Riots, trucker strikes, gas shortages. Wildfires , Floods, Blizzards, Droughts etcetera....
Mix in the loss of energy, a pandemic or two, stock market crash and food shortages.
Then embellish and amplify the lack of trust or validity of government at all levels. Information of any kind is suspect regardless of sources. Groundwork already done for that.
STIR ..... mix with a side of starvation, anarchy, chaos .
