Trump: GOP tax bill 'essentially' repeals ObamaCare

President Trump on Wednesday claimed the Republican tax plan “essentially” repeals former President Obama’s signature health-care law.

“When the individual mandate is being repealed, that means ObamaCare is being repealed,” Trump said during a Cabinet meeting at the White House. “We have essentially repealed ObamaCare and we will come up with something much better.”

The GOP tax overhaul gets rid of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate, which requires almost all Americans to purchase health insurance or pay a fine.

Trump said he refrained from playing up that measure because he was worried about how the news media would report it, but added “now that it’s approved, I can say that.”

Despite Trump’s claim, the tax bill does not repeal ObamaCare entirely.

People will still be able to purchase insurance through individual marketplaces, Medicaid expansion is preserved and consumer protections remain in place.

It will collapse without the mandate.

It cannot survive without the mandate.

But the Nevertrumpers said this could never happen.

On FNC and Fox Business, the Never Trumpers are saying this bill will hurt in the Republicans in the midterms. The truth is that this bill will greatly improve the economy and liberates the People from forced into Obamacare. The Never Trumpers simply hate that this is another victory for President Trump. They couldn't care less how it affects the American People.

It does repeal it since it won’t survive without being funded by healthy people forced into it.

‘essentially’ repeals ObamaCare, Jarhead9297 wrote:
No it doesn’t repeal it!! Not a single bit! That’s like saying someone will willing drop their employer supplemented health-care just because! This mantra that it will kill it is a load of crap! Tax payer supplemented and funded Obamacare is still there! People who use Obamacare to receive free healthcare will still use it. Those that don’t have health insurance but need it will still use it! All laws with respect to Obamacare still exist.

I realize that there are some semantics involved here, but you and many others here completely miss the point that President Trump is trying to make. Without the mandate people will once again be able legally purchase insurance that does not comply with all of the special interest Obamacare requirements that have doubled and tripled the cost of health insurance. Non-compliant alternatives are for the most place not available at this time because of the Obamacare "mandate".

Why does this matter? I do not think that you and many others here understand this at all. Here is how it affects my wife and I. We previously had health insurance that became unaffordable because of Obamacare. So we switched to Christian Healthcare Ministries “coverage” which has many advantages over traditional insurance, but a few disadvantages as well.

For us Christian Healthcare Ministries costs less than a quarter of the traditional health insurance we had previously and in many cases provides better coverage and it has an exclusion from the Obamacare mandate. But it does require one to do a lot of the leg work that people normally expect insurance companies take care of like negotiating for a lower price from providers.

Unfortunately because of IRS requirements we cannot pay for Christian Healthcare Ministries with retirement funds that that were earmarked to pay for “health insurance”. These are use it or lose it funds so this has been a problem. We have been using part of it for vision and dental plans that have little value for us.

With the mandate gone, affordable non-Obamacare compliant health insurance products should become available again and we should be able to use the funds that we have available efficiently again. So for us, Trump is right, Obamacare may still be around for those who want it, but we will soon be able to purchase common sense, affordable actual health insurance that doesn't pay for drug abuse treatment programs, sex change operations, and abortions. And we will once again be able to use our retirement earmarked for health insurance efficiently once again. So for us Obamacare’s negative consequences will be gone and President Trump is essentially correct.

I’m not fully understanding....so the mandate strips requirements of health providers that were enforced under Obamacare?

I thought the mandate only applied to all citizens stating that you must show proof you carry insurance and you must carry insurance. I didn’t think the mandate applied to requirements insurers must abide by

It is GOOD to have the mandate repealed, BUT that does not mean that the Insurance Companies can LEGALLY OFFER the old, low-cost policies like they used to do.

I’m not fully understanding....so the mandate strips requirements of health providers that were enforced under Obamacare?

Only health insurance that complied with all of the Obamacare requirements allowed one to not pay the mandated penalty. The only other option that allowed most people to avoid the penalty was to join a “Healthcare Ministry” like my wife and I did.

With the penalty gone, people will now be able to purchase non-compliant forms of health insurance such as catastrophic plans that cost only a fraction of full Obamacare compliant insurance and then use Healthcare Savings plans to pay for more routine medical expenses. This is far less expensive and actually gives better protection if one were to suffer from a disease or injury that required very expensive treatment.

This is why eliminating the mandate guts Obamacare and opens up a multitude of mere affordable healthcare insurance options. President Trump actually is correct... Obamacare is now on the way out because it will not be able to compete with other forms of health insurance. This will lower the costs for families and people who want health insurance coverage and will reduce the amount the government currently is paying out in subsidies.

The liberals in California know what this will cost them:

“The State of California is expected to lose nearly $1.3 billion a year in Obamacare penalties, due to the tax reform bill eliminating fines for uninsured individuals, and employers not signing up for health care.”

As Trump Ends Obamacare Mandate, California May Impose Its Own

California’s Democrat-controlled legislature is considering a state version of Obamacare’s individual mandate to replace the one killed by President Trump’s new tax reform bill. State Senator and Chair of the Senate Health Committee Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina) told the San Francisco Chronicle that the tax reform that passed both houses of Congress this week, which would eliminate the penalty for not buying health insurance, “is projected to result in 1.7 million fewer Californians having health insurance over the next decade.”

Hernandez claimed that, “All options are on the table if federal enforcement of the individual mandate ends.”

The State of California is expected to lose nearly $1.3 billion a year in Obamacare penalties, due to the tax reform bill eliminating fines for uninsured individuals, and employers not signing up for health care.

Covered California executive director Peter Lee suggested at a Dec. 7 board meeting that the Democrat-controlled California legislature should pass its own state-level individual mandate. He stated that there is a precedent for a state mandate from former Republican Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s 2007 health care reform deal.

There are some on this thread saying this is just spin and has zero impact.

And this, ladies and gentleman, is the # 1 reason the democrats are flipping out and freaking out over this bill, now a law.

It’s a major blow against government control of our healthcare, and this enrages the control freak RATS.

You can currently purchase Non-Obamacare compliant health insurance plans. They are far more affordable than compliant plans because they do not include all the BS features such as paying for abortion, sex change operations and drug treatment programs. They just did not prevent you from having to pay the penalty.
