Training Officers to Shoot First, and He Will Answer Questions Later
NY Times ^

Posted on 01/05/2018 10:45:05 AM PST by JP1201

WASHINGTON — The shooting looked bad. But that is when the professor is at his best. A black motorist, pulled to the side of the road for a turn-signal violation, had stuffed his hand into his pocket. The white officer yelled for him to take it out. When the driver started to comply, the officer shot him dead.

The driver was unarmed.

Taking the stand at a public inquest, William J. Lewinski, the psychology professor, explained that the officer had no choice but to act.

“In simple terms,” the district attorney in Portland, Ore., asked, “if I see the gun, I’m dead?”

“In simple terms, that’s it,” Dr. Lewinski replied.

When police officers shoot people under questionable circumstances, Dr. Lewinski is often there to defend their actions. Among the most influential voices on the subject, he has testified in or consulted in nearly 200 cases over the last decade or so and has helped justify countless shootings around the country.

His conclusions are consistent: The officer acted appropriately, even when shooting an unarmed person. Even when shooting someone in the back. Even when witness testimony, forensic evidence or video footage contradicts the officer’s story.

Whoopie. My ROE would not allow me to do this. Cops shouldn’t have a looser ROE than the military.

It only makes sense that cops are apprehensive of their lives. When they tell you do not do something, don’t do it. Nobody ever died when being polite to a cop. Only those that don’t obey cops have the tendency to suicide by cop. I apologize if I sound harsh, but I speak the plain truth.

So. If you’re a cop in a bad shooting incident - you want to call this Lewinski guy as an expert to testify on your behalf.

In before me ;)

I’ve posted the same thing many times.

If we give police officers ROE that allows them to shoot first, we’ve given them combat ROE.

If they have combat ROE, that means there has to be an enemy.

If there has to be an enemy then who fits the bill?

Everyone who isn’t a cop.

William J. Lewinski richly deserves to be shot by a cop who in ‘in fear for his life’.

Umm, no. Did you read the excerpt? That guy died after being told to pull his hand out of his pocket.

Recently the big deal was about some poor dumb drunk following every command - only to be shot and killed.

And that cop was acquitted.

Quote for Truth.

Some days it doesn’t pay to go outside. It has gotten to the point in many areas where folks stop and ask themselves - “Will calling the cops make the situation better?”

The answer is normally - no.

If a cop doesn’t have the ability to control his fear long enough to assess a situation and guarantee that there is in fact a genuine *threat* to his life - or the lives of those around him before he opens fire on someone, then he doesn’t need to be a cop.

Our community is burying a 29 year old father of 2 today who was killed responding to a noise call last Sunday along with 4 other police officers injured. The entire community has pulled together to honor this young man. Police are not perfect but I doubt any of the keyboard warriors here would do their job no matter what the pay.

If anyone who isn’t a cop is subject to being spontaneously murdered because cops see us as their enemies then maybe it’s not out of line for every single American to consider cops as their enemies.

Seriously, the cops need to start acting like Americans instead of the armed force that’s occupying America.

It’s getting to the point where citizens rightly fear for their lives in a police encounter. The first use of that defense for the charge of killing a cop can’t be too far off.

Not even a combat ROE.

Even in combat there are major limits and always have been in the US military.

Almost every one of these deaths would have ended with those involved being sent to make big rocks into little rocks if they have happened in wartime combat conditions.

Great. So when someone is breaking into your house at 2 am who are you going to call? Not the police I hope if that’s the way you feel. That would be rank hypocrisy. Saves on my tax dollars if we need less police

Come to my community today and say that while we are burying a fine young man killed in the line of duty. Just don’t be surprised at the response you get. It might not be warm and fuzzy

When feminism came along and they were forced to hire women patrol officers, did the training change?

I remember long ago LA cops had a height requirement that was above that of the average male. Cops were big men.

I know those requirements are all gone.

Is a gun the only remaining defense?

What a ridiculous thing to say. A lot of us here are combat veterans. We didn't expect to come home to a country where cops can shoot civilians at will.

In war time, you know who the enemy is. Cops don’t have that benefit.
