Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is one of the largest cities in the world without a central sewage system. Most of the more than 3 million residents use outhouses and rely on workers with some of the worst jobs in the world, hauling away human excrement by hand one bucket at a time. The men are called bayakou, and they work in the dark by candlelight. Rebecca Hersher spent a night with a group of them.

Haul away to where you ask? The article says they just dump it anywhere they can! The nearest canal, creek, gutter, etc. The only thing that matters is that it’s somewhere away from where they dug it out!
Oh, and the article describes how they get naked and go down INTO the outhouse to dig them out. Don’t wanna get your clothes clean doncha know!

4. If the “Area Cultural” briefing is only 30 minutes long, but the briefing on communicable diseases is 3 hours long- You might be deploying to a Shit Hole.
5. If the “Area Cultural” briefing includes facts that some leaders in the host country keep young boys as sexual slaves- You might be deploying to a Shit Hole.
6. If the “Area Cultural” briefing includes facts that male members of that society have multiple wives, but also engage in sexual activity with barnyard animals- You might be deploying to a Shit Hole.
7. If the “Medical Briefing” includes recommendations not to walk barefoot, drink the local water, or eat ANY food on the local economy- You might be deploying to a Shit Hole.
8. If the “Medical Briefing” includes information that the roadside ditches not only serve as flood control, but also as a common latrine- You might be deploying to a Shit Hole.
9. If the Daily Report for your new assignment includes an area for “Number of Personnel Med-Evaced” from theater for unknown diseases- You might be deploying to a Shit Hole.
10. If the monetary exchange rate is greater than 50 to 1 for local currency to US Dollars- You might be deploying to a Shit Hole.
OK, dumb, upper middle class, racist remark: what about somebody renting out port-a-pottys filled with toilet chemical, like the ones used all the time on US construction sites. As here, the waste could be periodically pumped out and trucked to sewage processing plants and be pumped into those plants for processing. The jobs would be healthier and cleaner and pay more.
The service would mainly be available to better off people at first but it ought to catch on. Then it could be sold to more and more people and landowners could gradually be required to use it.

That would be a funny Veritas video. Someone taking wine to a leftist restaurant, and asking them to please taste this new Haitian wine. Explain how it will help build that industry. As they taste it, start describing how the grapes are stomped by barefoot children of Port au Prince!
