The Nunes Memo: Just an Opening Act
city-journal.org ^ | Fred Siegel and Marc Epstein

The publication yesterday by the House Intelligence Committee, under the leadership of chairman Devin Nunes, of a four-page summary memo regarding FBI surveillance of a Trump campaign advisor in 2016 is the long-awaited opening act of an extended drama about the Obama administration’s abuse of power—which, when all is revealed, might yet outdo that of the Nixon administration.

Obama concealed his sharp-edged, Chicago-style machine politics under the rhetorical cover of progressivism. He was protected by a press corps that first enlisted in his administration and then fought to stop Donald Trump. But now that Obama is out of office, his ability to intimidate is much diminished. This past week, a 2005 picture of a beaming Obama next to a bright-eyed Louis Farrakhan surfaced, after having been held back for more than a decade at the behest of a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey, who had been tried for corruption by Obama’s Justice Department after he refused to toe the party line about the “peace-loving” mullahs of Iran, has now seen the charges against him dropped. Z Street, a hawkish nonprofit supporter of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in Israel, had been tied up with IRS matters since 2009; it has just been released from its legal chains. Democrats are holding to the line that the prophet of hope and change ran a pure administration, virtually free of scandal. But the memo is probably just the beginning; we’re likely to see many more revelations come out.

As Hillary said upon recognizing the Trump victory: “We’re all gonna hang.”

The headline is not really addressed in the article. The article is just run of the mill regurgitation of what has been written over and over

It does already by a factor of 10

The legacy of the Hussein regime will be of progressive fascism never before seen in our Republic.

If Rosenstein isn’t fired, would that imply that Comey and the others also should not be punished for pushing this false memo in order to justify spying?

Sessions supports Rosenstein 100 % and publicly says so. Rosenstein isn’t going anywhere because he, Sessions and Wray are key to protecting Mueller.

And Mueller is the Dems last hope.

Compare anything that Trump has said with the statements and actions of these three. Obama is definitely still very much in the house (DoJ).

[W]e’re likely to see many more revelations come out.

Likely? It is a certainty. Nunes is preparing Phase II now, revealing a few of the hits, runs and errors of the State Dept. Stay tuned...

The Democrats opposed the release of the memo by claiming it would reveal national security secrets. These are the same Democrats who had no problem with Hillary’s private, non-secure email server containing hundreds of classified messages.

I was not all that impressed with the contents of the memo, but then, I’ve been here and also reading Sundance every day for the past two years, so I don’t know what MORE I was expecting.

That the forces of evil were mobilizing in October 2016 is no surprise.

I’m much more interested in what’s not in the memo, which is what they were up to in 2015 and early 2016, when the situation was still fluid. I’m also quite interested in how established the pattern of FISA abuse was and when it started.

This all goes back, IMO, to the Bush decision to fight domestic Islamic terrorism using the legal system, as if there were a few criminals among a large group of “new Americans” instead of following the FDR precedent of isolating all of them first while we fought the war overseas and sorting them out later.

This decision made a secret police and secret courts necessary, and, as any student of history knows, once you have secret police and secret courts, they take on a life of their own.

What percentage of the “facts” underlying the decision to appoint Mueller came from the Carter FISA warrant and its fruits?

We know that Comey’s unauthorized or illegal leak of his Trump notes was another contributing factor. Apparently, Comey’s memos are not being released in response to FOIA request because they are part of Mueller’s investigation. The article I read on this suggests that Mueller must be deciding the obvious — whether Comey’s leak was improper.

So, bottom line, can Mueller sustain an investigation that was not launched in good faith? Won’t all his documents become public eventually?

There’s still a lot we don’t know yet, so be patient.

And there IS a lot more to come out.

How do we know that?

If people were willing to cook up a fake dossier and abuse their government powers to try to remove a duly elected President, why would they stop there?

Look at the panicked reaction of the Dems and the Media to this - would they do that if it was just the FISA issue?

By their actions, we know there’s more, and it must be real bad.

I suspect that part of the reason the FBI was so upset about memo being released is that they know that their mistakes are par for the course. So, this collection of bad actors is about on par with those involved with FISA warrants for years. The FISA system is probably routinely abused.
