Liberals outraged: Trump wants to replace food stamps — with food!
The Washington Times ^ | 2-13-18 | Joseph Curl

In his big budget proposal Monday, President Trump offered a novel idea: Instead of giving needy people stamps they can redeem for food, why not just give them actual food?

As you might guess, liberals were enraged by the notion. How dare Mr. Trump try to take food stamps away from hungry people and give them — of all things — food?

Here’s how the liberal HuffPost saw it: “Facing a trillion-dollar deficit because of his just-passed tax cuts, President Donald Trump has an idea for how to get some of that money back: making poor people eat beans and rice.”

Oh, the humanity!

Currently, food stamps — known officially as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — are provided for some 42 million people, 80 percent of whom get food vouchers each month worth at least $90 per person. They can be redeemed at many stores for food, but the program is rife with abuse.

Under the Trump proposal, those 80 percent of all SNAP recipients would get about half of their benefits in the form of a “USDA Foods package,” NPR reported. “The package was described in the budget as consisting of ‘shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit and vegetables.’”

The program would be called “America’s Harvest Box.” Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue called it “a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families — and all of it is home-grown by American farmers and producers.”

Put me in charge and we’ll replace food stamps with...Shovels, rakes, mops and brooms, lawn mowers, paint brushes, chainsaws,...

And nutraloaf.

As much nutraloaf as they care to eat.

They should be glad they're only dealing with the Trump administration, and not me.

I was always taught that beggars can’t be choosers. You don’t like beans and rice, be grateful for it anyway until you can get a job and buy what you like with your own money.

Yeah, and if their kid is getting 2-3 free meals a day at school, reduce the MREs that family will receive. The duplication in “feeding the children” is scandalous, IMHO.

I don’t begrudge them the desire to have a couple of beers or sugar snacks.

That's what getting a job and earning your own money is for.

“Liberals outraged”

Do it anyway.

Outraged is the normal state of being for liberals. Plenty of time and $$$ wasted to prove once more that their way never works.

Not to mention the runaway fraud involved .. misuse of the benefits .. etc.

How about giving them two military MREs per person per day.

< snicker >

They'll save on toilet paper that way ...

I would imagine the recipients would get more “bang for the buck” through this program, and certainly more healthful food. The thing that bothers me about the program as presently structured isn’t that some may choose to blow $$ on steak or lobster, wasting $$ that would be better spent, but that recipients can “trade” the discounted $ value for actual cash. I.e., I can sell you $50 worth of my food stamps at the grocery store for $25 cash. I can then take that $25 to spend for Brother Booze that the food stamps won’t allow. There’s always a way around these restrictions. Always.

If I’m going to feed you, for free, you don’t get a say in what you get for supper. Beer, Twinkies, and Marlboros ain’t food in My World, fool.
Learn to cook. I’m thinking red beans and rice. That could be a good place to start.

From the “old fardt”,

The Democraps are out to control and destroy you, to where you accept their ‘crumbs’, if and when they think you are approved to have them.

Chipping away at any method that the Democraps have entrenched, to make the populace free from the yolk of government bondage will make them squeal.

Real food is better ! They used to give real food and people ate it just fine. And their kids got fed. Giving away money leads too often to drug and booze purchases —-and hungry children.

Great point. I wish I had started a document collecting all the hypocrisies of the Rats a long time ago.

What do you mean ‘anyway’? If you do something and a lib isn’t outraged, you did the wrong thing. They’re an excellent barometer.

McDonald's is still living in Obama/Mooch land. They do so at their own peril:

So Michelle Obama tinkers with school lunches and it’s all Big Brother telling people what they should eat. Now along comes Department of Agriculture telling food stamp recipients the same thing?

McDonald's is banishing cheeseburgers and chocolate milk from its Happy Meal menu in an effort to cut down on the calories, sodium, saturated fat and sugar kids consume at its restaurants.

Diners can still ask specifically for cheeseburgers or chocolate milk with the kid's meal, but the fast-food company says not listing them will reduce how often they're ordered. It says after it removed soda from the Happy Meal menu four years ago orders for it fell 14 percent.

I think I remember that the government commodities food given out in the ‘50s and ‘60s included delicious peanut butter, and powdered eggs. Maybe add those to your list.

“OMG! He wants to bring back slavery!”

I know! That’s the Dem’s area of expertise! If they can’t keep you tethered to them PHYSICALLY, they at least enslave you spiritually. ;)
