Study: NFL Needs to Rediscover Its Heart If It's to Overcome Ratings Slump
ADage ^ | 2-16-2018 | Anthony Crupi

the NFL's ongoing ratings slide has been an exercise in highly subjective interpretation. Ask 20 fans why they believe the league's popularity is on the wane, and you'll get 20 responses, ranging from political (players taking a knee during the anthem) to pragmatic (the specter of repetitive brain trauma).

In the interest of trying to get at the heart of what's actually driving the ratings erosion ... Horizon Media began an investigation. While the NFL and its network partners may not find the data terribly reassuring, the good news is that many factors that have alienated fans appear to be remediable.

politics was lower on the list, Hall says. The NFL seems to be losing its connection with fans, who feel the sports has become too much of a business, is less family-friendly and, in a sense, is losing its 'heart.'

Components that went into the study were a proprietary survey of nearly 2,000 sports fans conducted during the final week in December, as well as Nielsen ratings data, social media analysis and insights derived from Magid's EmotionalDNA project.

If 19 year old guys could cheer for real sports teams, and see real sportsmanship, real love of country and team ... if 19 year old guys had an alternative ... would that impact their anti-social behavior?

And is this study worth a post?

If the 19 year old ‘kid’ was juiced up on prescription medication (as has been suggested), then it really doesn’t matter about discussing the woes of the NFL.

I do agree that the ratings business is permanent and will worsen for the next season, but their ‘business model’ has come and gone.

NEVER going back. I’ve got better things to do with my time. To hell with the NFL.

It’s about the disrespect to the flag, faun social justice and nothing more. They blew it.

As long as the players keep using it and the owners keep letting them use it and the commissioner keep letting them use it as a political platform, it’s doomed.

Start the Rollerball leagues up with no penalty, no time limit. First one to score wins.

Here’s the elephant in the room: The NFL stands for coddled felons being paid outrageous amounts of money to publicly insult America on national media while all of its officials and team owners look on, applauding.

Of course, more money will be spent on studies to tell the NFL it isn’t so.

Back around 2000, I was watching the SB with my daughter who was about 8 years old. The NFL / Fox allowed an ad with simulated sex, the two were doing it on a desk and the woman was moaning real loud. The NFL started to lose me right then. I can’t even watch a game with my daughter with that raunchiness.

Should have fired the Kneelers or at least benched them from the start.
To late now.

If anything bring back the XFL. The NFL is dead to me.

footballsissy

Enough is enough. How can I support
an operation that is dedicated to pushing dubious
social causes?  That ain't sports.  That's a mass sashay.

The problem for them is, to paraphrase from
the movie Airplane, "I picked a bad presidential cycle to jink left."

Sportsmanship is a word I haven’t heard in a long on any NFL
broadcast.
Every (literally) scoring play is not official till reviewed by “new york’’.
Fantasy football inspires individualism for some players.
Far too many game stoppages, especially late in close games while they try to figure out who is going to win.
Refs on camera time needs to be cut way back.
Hash marks should be moved outside to where they used to be.
Owners have let some senator’s son take all the authority from them while
paying him $50 mill a year. WTF?
I gave up on the league this year.

I would maintain that the NFL's true heart has been on display ever since that Cap(whatever) started this fustercluck.

And that's even setting aside the obscene salary being doled out to that gutless puke Goodell.

I hope the bastards collapse like a cheap tent and end up working at McDonalds.

Rugby is typically more entertaining and the players take more risk because they aren’t as well protected.

“The Negro Felons League has revealed its soul.“

Exactly. Too late to close that door.

The older generation has been dis’d, and the younger generation won’t become fans — they have v games and social media to entertain them, with emotional, biophysical feedback. And soccer is the sport most of them actually played and know.

I'm with you. I've boycotted the NFL for the last two seasons because of Kapperdick and his cohorts. I've burned a good bit of my Buccaneers gear, or thrown it out! I'm done with these bastages!

Rugby is more entertaining to watch and to play. Because the players are not armored, the contact is different (still violent)and rarely is there head-to-head contact. In my personal years of field play, I saw many more serious, debilitating injuries from American football than from rugby.
