About 50 years ago, the decision was made to mainstream most of the folks in institutions, and they were turned out on the streets and the institutions closed. We are now paying the price of that decision.

So...
Define mental illness.
Is it wanting to own firearms?
Believing that your government has slipped its leash and grossly exceeded its charter?
Wanting to keep what you earn rather than pay it to the government and its favored groups?
The Soviets used “mental illness” against dissidents right from the start, and you can bet the Tranzis will, too.

To liberals, conservatives are deranged.
And if your psychiatrist thinks your political views render you unfit to be a gun owner, good luck appealing it.
That’s why I am averse to a registry with or without safeguards.
Human bias and subjectivity cannot be corrected for by whatever system we might institute.

“- he wants trained pros on the ground instead.”
That is exactly what was at the Fla school shooting. The coward refused to do his job. And he was notified of the gunman’s presence BEFORE he entered the building and started shooting.
“trained pros” are not the answer

This is the Left's attempt to turn Walsh into another Bill Nye.
Walsh, of all people, should be appalled at the total breakdown of law enforcement at all levels of government that occurred in Parkland.
If you're not supporting the NRA or GOA, you need to do so. Because the Left and useful idiots on the Right are coming after gun-owners with a vengeance, and we've seen this movie ending before. Once our guns are confiscated, we'll become just a province of the global elites.

i will consider supporting a National Nut Registry so long as the first 10,000 entries therein are “our” politicians

Well back in the halcyon days of the 1950’s crazy people and perverts simply disappeared to state run hospitals and sanitariums. I always wondered what happened to Uncle Bobby George.

A sex offender DID something. A state of Mental illness is a matter of opinion.
The common thread for mass murders has been terrorism and mental illness. - As for sex offenders, someone with known sexual predilections, even when not convicted, should not be placed in a position of trust that could lead to such offenses.
- Similarly, someone with known serious terrorist inclinations should not be trusted with weapons.
- Similarly, someone with known serious mental illness, even if not yet convicted of a crime, should not be trusted with weapons.
- To be fair, those barred from owning weapons should also be barred from voting.

How about anyone collecting SSDI for an avowed mental illness? Either they shouldn’t have firearms or they’re just gaming SSDI.

Slippery slope.
Example: Millions have taken SSRIs, in fact the doc gave me a prescription for neorapathy pain of all things.
I researched and did not take them after all but, Its in my med history therefore, I could end up on the list should they ever decide SSRIs are a trigger.

The deeper issue would be... HOW DO YOU GET ON THE LIST?
By applying for and accepting SSDI for a mental illness?

Feel bad for the guy with his kid being murdered and all, but he can gargle sand as far as any restrictions on our rights in regards the 2nd Amendment.
He has zero qualifications to speak about security of anything. Crawl under a rock you turd (Walsh, not the article poster).

Well we’ve seen how the sex offender registry was abused, could you imagine what they would do with this one?
