Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, has died at age 88, her office announced Thursday.

“To have met Louise Slaughter is to have known a force of nature. She was a relentless advocate for Western New York whose visionary leadership brought infrastructure upgrades, technology and research investments, and two federal manufacturing institutes to Rochester that will transform the local economy for generations to come," Liam Fitzsimmons, chief of staff, said in a statement.

Slaughter had been hospitalized after suffering a concussion in her home, her office said earlier this week.

she had virtually no legislative legacy
Yeah, I'm sadly aware that over her 30+ years she essentially did nothing for the distract at large, but supported women, minorities and other assorted "victims" with great energy.

She had Rochester and Niagara Falls, connected by a narrow strip along Lake Ontario.

Never, ever will this part of NY vote republican.
The guy she beat initially in 1976 was Republican Fred Eckert. Prior to his running for Congress he was my town supervisor - Greece.
Now, thanks to gerrymandering, the district has changed physically and there's certainly plenty of people voting Democrat.
But to say the district will never vote GOP is a little short sighted.
In fact, Louise almost lost her re-election a few years ago (2014?) to a Republican, and IIRC, only won by a few hundred votes.

Maybe he’s afraid that Ducey will select an actual conservative to serve out his term.

Can he stay home for years? There should be laws regarding mental and physical ability to perform one’s job. I do recall at least one case where a dead person won the election. Seems if one is dead, one is automatically eliminated and the opponent wins.

Sadly, Monroe county is full of lib voters (think: Brighton and the city of Rochester)

Everyone expected her to do a lot better the last time out. It was pretty darn close. Repubs have to get better at getting out the vote.

P.S. the media was downplaying her condition. To hear them you’d think she just slightly bumped her head with a feather duster. Funny though when a conservative has a cold they describe them as being on life support.

Definitely. The City of Rochester and Monroe county as a whole has lost a LOT of population. My old street (Whitney St in the “hood” of Rochester) has virtually NO houses anymore—all torn down by the city during the Mayor Johnson regime. My house is the only one standing on the entire block!

The Clintons would have put piano wire across the top step to make sure the evil spawn would get the seat.

brianr10 :" She had Rochester and Niagara Falls, connected by a narrow strip along Lake Ontario."

She had a district shaped like a hand barbell
The narrow went along Lake Ontario,
and the two bulbous ends connected the inner city of Rochester with the inner city of Buffalo.
Literally, it was designed and gerrymandered to be a Democratic stronghold !
