They will be so safe that you can stand on the roof.

I suspect alcohol too. I’m glad they are reviewing it.

The technology will be improved. But can you ever prevent an accident by machine or human when someone at night runs or walks out in front of you?

The machines could drive 5 miles an hour at night with infrared detectors deployed. But who wants that?

"Yeah, hadn’t thought about putting a loved-one in car and sending them off to who knows where. No one to protect them, car quits, gets hacked, runs over someone, or takes a wrong turn into a bad neighborhood."

That's why it's important to arm Grandma with an AR15 before putting her in the self driving car. Grandma will clean up the bad neighborhood for us, and we'll all sleep better at night.

Um,cars and computers are human inventions. How is combining the two into one machine make it less prone to error than are the humans behind it?

We need more details. It doesn’t look good in my opinion. Something failed and the backup plan failed also..

"Um,cars and computers are human inventions. How is combining the two into one machine make it less prone to error than are the humans behind it?"

Machines are human inventions and human error can certainly occur in the design, and building of the machine. But once the machine is tested and most flaws identified and removed, the machine is capable of performing the exact same acts repetitively without error.

Everytime a human drives there is a potential for multiple human errors. Everything from driver distraction, road rage, visual perception failure, medical emergency, or simply error in judgement.

When a machine drives you have those same potentials, but they are far less likely. Machines don't get distracted easily, and they don't suffer road rage. They can suffer from a perception error, a sensor or mechanical failure, or a failure in logic embedded in the program. But those sort of errors can be managed with testing and redundant systems.

My bet is that the car followed the traffic laws and this woman was jay walking or walking against the light.

Then it's obvious it wasn't the car's fault. She should have gotten out of the way and deserved what she got for not following traffic laws. Why should driverless cars wait for little old ladies to finish crossing the street after the don't walk sign comes on or little kids and dogs run out into the street while chasing a ball or exiting a school bus. /s

Uber hit a bicyclist, not a pedestrian! There are picks of smashed up bike next to the Uber.

By the way, did the police seize the videos from the car?

Yes, if this was a pedestrian, why is there a smashed up bike next to the Uber car. The earlier reports questioned pedestrian vs. bicyclist. I'd say the smashed up bicycle answers that question.

You have some interesting points. However, I still have a mistrusting mentality when it comes to cars and computers. I’d rather be no where near a road if these things ever become accepted for travel.

GPS once showed I was driving thousands of mph. GPS always shows I’m driving in the river on the way to town and rarely gives accurate routes. Recalculating. Recalculating. Recalculating.

WHY the huge push for driver less cars?

So they can get rid of paid drivers for taxis, trucks etc.
