Since November, John Huber, the U.S. Attorney for Utah, has been on the case. Trump apparently didn’t know this, but he should have. Sometimes it’s better to talk to the Attorney General than mindlessly to blast him on Twitter.
Huber was appointed by President Obama, but his name was submitted by Senators Hatch and Lee of Utah. Thus, his selection by Sessions seems like a shrewd move. As Obama’s nominee it will be difficult for critics plausibly to paint him as anti-Democrat. But as the favorite of Hatch and Lee, Republicans should be confident that he’s not in the Democrats’ pocket. Moreover, because Huber works out of Utah, it’s unlikely that he’s connected in any way with D.C. insiders such as James Comey and Andrew McCabe.
What about the decision to use a U.S. attorney rather than appoint a special counsel? This decision also seems sound, and not just because I don’t like special counsels. The combination of the IG and the USA should be able to accomplish as much as a special counsel would — and accomplish it faster and with less fanfare.
The absence of fanfare is an advantage because it makes it more difficult for Democrats and their media partners to push the idea that anyone is being persecuted. A Justice Department investigation headed by two Obama appointees is harder to shoot at than a special counsel. And, of course, nothing prevents Sessions from appointing a special counsel if changed circumstances militate in favor of doing so.
In sum, Sessions has handled this matter well, Trump’s foolish tweets notwithstanding.
They eventually complied by providing the documents requested but they were redacted to hide details of the criminal investigation.
The only way to drain the swamp is get the money out of DC...

Mike Lee famously agreed with Lindsey Graham that there would be hell to pay if Trump fired Mueller. If siding with Graham and Mueller against Trump is conservative, Lee is conservative.

In Sessions’ statement, there was no disclaimer stating outright that Huber was not acting as a prosecutor: a statement of to whom a prosecutor reports in the performance of his duty, nor the nature of that prosecutor’s reports, does not stop his prosecutorial authority, nor does it state any limits upon his prosecutorial authority.
But even if you interpret what was stated as an outright statement, Huber does have a team of prosecutors that could prosecute under his authority.

If you want to politicize the process – as Rod Rosenstein did – then you appoint a Special Counsel and let him spend months and years abusing people’s rights in the pursuit of an array of irrelevant process crimes and indictments of foreign nationals who will never be brought to trial. But if you want to bring people to justice for real crimes against this country, AG Sessions obviously believes the best way to do it is within the confines and processes of the justice system as it was set up in the U.S. constitution.
Some are speculating that what Sessions really has Huber and Horowitz doing is laying the groundwork for the appointment of a second special counsel after the Horowitz report has been released. I don’t agree with that, for the reasons laid out above. Working together, Huber and Horowitz have every power possessed by a special counsel: Given that, why would the AG reinvent the wheel just at the cusp of issuing indictments and perp-walking the wrongdoers? Makes no sense to me.
What does make logical sense is that Sessions believes his Justice Department is capable of actually doing its mandated job. It’s sort of amazing that people who call themselves conservatives object to that approach.
Just another day in Jeff Sessions don’t need no stinking second special counsel America.

The Sessions confirmation process was savagery, but we’re used to that. He got through on a near party line vote.

There may be one or two decent people in our bureaucracies, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
I like him being from Utah. Mueller’s grand juries in DC are populated by likely Trump hating democrats. They will be the ones issuing rubber-stamped directives at the behest of a compromised special prosecutor. Now, the opposing traffic will have to go through a likelier less partisan grand jury.
