Let me see if I understand, you go into a profession known for low salaries. You subsequently complain about said salaries, the hours, spending your own funds. Yet you say it’s a calling. I wouldn’t teach in today’s environment of entitled kids (not all). Homeschool yes, public no way

It’s basically about teachers refusing to teach because they want more money. But “Today” hypes it as “a powerful movement.”

Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.

Note: this is my first “Today” item in years. I’m trying to diversify a bit from the steady diet of MSNBC/CNN coverage.

If what I’ve read is correct, and they haven’t had a pay raise in 10 years - a solid decade - and there was no increase planned for this year either, well, hmm. Not saying I support striking, but I can’t be surprised either.

OK is 49th or 50th in teacher pay.

What other job in the world, do you work for 6 months and receive full salary.

Another example of the liberal news media
creating the news, ..rather than just reporting it !

The $6,100 pay raise now puts OK in the middle of the pack.

Re: From https://articles.niche.com/teacher-salaries-in-america/: The national average starting teacher salary is $38,617, while the average teacher salary in America (non-starting) is $58,950.

AND

From https://www.foxbusiness.com : In the September 2014 Census Bureau report on income and poverty in the U.S., the median household income in America across all jobs was $51,939.

For years we have been told that teachers are vastly underpaid, but now I am so not sure at all!

PUBLIC SCHOOL "TEACHERS" WALK OUT.

REAL TEACHERS, TEACH.

Quality is always recognized and rewarded.

59K per year for a part time job sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

My property taxes went up 10% this year. Most of it was due to the school portion of the tax bill.

I live in a landlocked older suburb so we are not expanding, no new schools, no increase in population.

What is it when you adjust for cost of living?

The first is on a per person as well and ignores significantly better benefits than the average person (plus 2-3 months of vacation). The latter statistic is household income which is ~1.6 incomes per household on average. So teachers make much more than average, with better hours and significantly better benefits.

Oklahoma should require every student to complete an online lesson plan during the strike, and open up proctored study centers where students can take the online courses to accommodate parents who cannot leave their children at home unsupervised.

The union would stampede back to the table if they knew that every parent it the state was about to learn how easy and efficient it is to home school using modern technology.

That’s weird. My wife’s aunt and uncle were teachers their entire adult lives and retired as millionaires.

I don't know the OK cost of living.
I assume it's comparable to surrounding states...

One sign a lady held up said “Stack ‘em deep, teach them cheap.” Some “calling.”

I was an undergraduate at Berkeley, and I participated in every stupid protest to come down the pike. Young and stupid... I know...

In the (many more than) four years that I was there getting my undergraduate degree, the by far biggest protest we had was against increased registration fees. I turns out most students cared a lot more about their own money than they did about East Timor or Apartheid...
