Proposal would require Austin homeowners to install insect screens

"I think as a homeowner we would like the option to have them on and off of the house because we kind of treat it seasonal," he said. The city's Code Department is looking at homes and apartment complexes across the city. They're modeling the proposed ordinance on international standards they got from the 2015 International Property Maintenance Code after the city council adopted it last October. It states homes with air conditioning would not be required to have insect screens, but Isis Lopez with the Code Department says that could change. "It would depend on the feedback," she said. "So, if the community members suggest this should only be for new homes, we will take that into consideration, if community members suggest this should only be for apartments but not for private residential homes, we will take that into consideration."

Uber liberal treehugging commie Austin wants to make homeowners have window screens. It's not your house, it's the government's house which they allow you to live in as long as you pay them for the privilege and abide by their rules.

Crap like this is why I live in the country. Code? If you’re standing on my porch you’ve been on my property (and in my sights) for 120 yards.

Far, far better to teach people to read (English, at least at the HS senior level), to learn how to evaluate risks vs. benefits (on any topic) and to live responsibly and make wise choices.

I doubt that many folks who understand risks from mosquitoes are unwilling to install and maintain screens.

I’m surprised that you’d find many homes in the Austin area without window screens.
If you don’t have a/c then opening windows would be a norm I’d guess and without
screens insects would be a problem.

Screens here are in the neighborhood of $100 each. I have twelve windows. So, I would have to spend close to my tax bill to put screens on windows that I never, never open.

You’re lucky. I have twenty windows. Taxes here are 4 months of income.

I believe that the People’s Republc of Boulder (CO) uses that same internationsl code.
Yes, they are that stupid, too.
Hopefully, CW-II will allow us to “process progressives” in the manner they very much deserve.

Austin is Berkeley with cow $hit! You have a state capitol with a university, what could be worse except to also have a gaggle of illegals and a Beaner Female “sheriff!”

Next they need to make everyone have at least 2 fly swatters. They need to be registered of course. And if they are used to kill insects, they need to call an ambulance and have the thing pronounced dead. The swatterperson is responsible for the burial of the bug. Then they have to turn in their swatters.

Is this some way of Austin trying to reduce Zika and other pest-born diseases brought in by illegals, and treated at citizens’ cost when the illegals come into the ER for treatment?
