Amarillo has had only one day with any measurable moisture this year. The humidity in the Panhandle and the South Plains near Lubbock has been as low as 3% this year drier than the Sahara Desert.
We’ve got a bad one in E. AZ running uphill, downwind from the Black River, very primitive backroad country, heavy forest. It’s called Rattlesnake and it’s burned 7000 acres and is only 5% contained.
The only help will be from a fire a few years back which burned a lot of what is in front of Rattlesnake already.
*******
May be fix to make a batch of chitlins.
Ping
So glad the mesquite is gone!! Hope thefire stays clear of your area.
Mississippi has sent their firefighters to Texas today as its that serious.
Crud. I hate fire season. Good wishes to all those folks in the way.
And I especially hate windy fire season.
Here, I was threatened Friday by one grass / forest fire a few miles away, with me directly upwind in 60MPH gusts and 40mph sustained. Fortunately they got it slowed down, and mostly out over the weekend.
Then yesterday another one started on the other side of the mountain. ;-( and the winds are back up in the 40s this afternoon.
Its a miracle Boise City still exists. All it is is 5 ways out of town and a court house.
God put lots of elbow room out here.
Had 3 calls of concern
“explosions reported.....likely oil wells”
Most operational wells are surrounded by large gravel pads as fire protection. Propane tanks more likely.
Same conditions used to burn out that Waco compound.
God works in mysterious ways.....................
national guard called in to help
homes lost
Well I guess me being one of three ain’t bad LOL
Pheasant hunted in both Guymon and Garden City. The birds just go vertical, spread their wings and let the wind carry them like a sail. Whooosh! They’re gone.
Ever been to Felt, Kenton or Wheeless? That whole corner of the US is pretty empty. The area from Clayton through Capulin and on to Raton with the Gamma Grass looks like it was made for a Western movie set. Especially the area around Capulin.
I stopped on a dirt road on the state line with New Mexico West of Kenton back in the 70s in the middle of the night. I could not see a light anywhere except for the stars. You could touch those of course. The few that live out there may know how lucky they are.
Travelling from KS to New Mexico every year or so for family takes me right down 64 thru Boise City. If we miss the turn for Dalhart ,TX you end up going to Felt, OK and that adds beaucoup miles to the trip out in the wasteland past Clayton, NM. trying to turn back south on a reliable paved road. I love driving those roads on clear nights with the moon shinning.
Hand slung chitlins!............................
Tinderbox!
A quarter of a million aces burned in less that 2 days. This is a satellite view. Where you can see the dirt roads make a square, thats one square mile
Current drought map is not encouraging. These folks need some rain!
Praying that Oklahoma has a much better day today.
They always need rain.
Where did you find the satellite photo?
The fire in Ks along the state line burned over 800,000 acres last year. Of course you’d know that.
Sure pray they get a break.
Clearly that is the case. But can’t we also somehow tie in The Rising Tide of Racism in America to these fires?
