SunTrust announces possible breach of 1.5 million customer records

What we know about the alleged SunTrust data breach On April 20, SunTrust Bank announced that an insider may have stolen records on 1,500,000 customers with the criminal intent of sharing them outside the organization.

The bank first became aware of the likelihood of “inappropriate access” of records in February. A subsequent internal investigation now points to an ex-employee for the alleged theft.

It is believed the culprit tried to print the records and share them with a “criminal third party,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

The investigation is still ongoing as the bank continues to work closely with law enforcement and outside experts.

What info was compromised? SunTrust says it’s likely that names, addresses, phone numbers and account balances of 1.5 million customers were breached.

Fortunately, the bank reports Social Security numbers, account numbers, passwords, and driver’s license information are not believed to have been accessed.

And in another bright spot in a bad situation, SunTrust notes there’s no pattern “significant fraudulent activity around impacted accounts.”

are not believed to have been accessed...

Oh, that should make customers feel ever so much better.

If we made this kind of cr@p a capital crime, we'd have a lot freaking less of it.

Is your doctor’s office pushing you to communicate online and have your medical records out there to be hacked? And, they’re telling you how safe they are. Yeah, right!!

Lifelock contacted me about 3-4 weeks ago. It was SunTrust. They were contacting me as someone had used my name and exact SSN for a new credit card. In short, there is a man with my exact name and spelling who is 16 plus years younger. His SSN could not be close to mine as I was in an east coast state when I got mine at 15. He is in Idaho. He used my SSN twice that day or Sun Trust gave him my SSN. I filed a police report.

isn’t SunTrust the outfit that fired all of their domestic IT staff and replaced them with H1B’s, forcing the fired IT folk to train their H1B replacements or forfeit their severance package?

I actually had an unpleasant confrontation with the gals in the reception area at a medical facility when I refused to give them my social security no. They said if I didn’t give it to them I could not see the Dr...........I walked out!

So much of this would go away if the government established pin nunbers for you ssn.

The pin numbers could be monitored or changed by the users at any time.

As it is now ssn is like a user account with out a password. Crazy.

My husband wanted to make identity theft equal to kidnapping.

Of course his identity has been stolen, once with the help of the US Congress.

I keep my money in my mattress. :)

I agree 100% !! A minimum of 30 years hard time should be enforced. My few experiences with this type of fraud (though certainly not as widespread as this case) were not even investigated. Zero tolerance would make a difference.

Yes, SunTrust did toss everyone out the door for H1Bs. SunTrust was the bank that tried to hold their former employees to a couple of years of responding to support issues, should the need arise when Apu & Co. screw up.
