So this 18-year-old Florida high school student invites his girlfriend to the prom with a sign that actually is pretty racist and seriously stupid.
Naturally, the full force of school authority lept into action with robocalls of assurances that counseling would be available and disciplinary actions, while the local NAACP wants to go into the school to teach the right way to think about race relations.
The large sign the Riverview High School student was holding in the picture said: If I was black, Id be picking cotton, but Im white, so Im picking u 4 prom. So yes, unlike what may have been a manufactured racism incident with the two black guys at the Philadelphia Starbucks, this is obviously a racist sign.
Interestingly, the boys girlfriend seemed to like the proposal as she gave it a pair of heart-eyed emojis on her Snapchat account. So two racist kids, or two dumb kids, or maybe two kids whose amygdalas were running way ahead of their pre-frontal cortexs. (Translation: their emotions ran away from their good sense.)
The proper response would seem to be that some wiser people in the boys and girls lives talk to them and explain how that really is offensive to black people and a lot of others, and it was just wrong. Explain to them that cotton-picking is a direct reference to the days of slavery and post-slavery South and saying that if he was black he would be doing that now suggests blacks remain enslaved.
But of course that is not the era in which we live. The entire high school structure lept into action to protect delicate feelings of the other students. Government had to step in and correct wrong thinking and speaking even though it did not happen on school property. The local NAACP wants to go into the school with corrective teaching and urged the district to take a day like Starbucks did recently to ensure people think about race relations properly.
A robocall was sent to Riverview parents first thing Monday morning, alerting them to the traumatizing sign and letting parents and students know that guidance counselors and administrators were available to help students deal with the ordeal.
The robocall by Riverview acting principal Kathy Wilks assured parents that the post was racial in nature and the administration became aware of it last night Many who saw the post are understandably upset with its contents as well as the subsequent commentary to the post. Riverview High School absolutely does not condone or support the message conveyed in this post.
Because there was some confusion on that point?
The robocall went on: We are focused on ensuring that Riverview High School provides a safe and secure environment for all of our students and that all students feel welcome and understand the value that they all bring to our school community. Our guidance counselors and administrators are available for any student who wishes to speak to someone regarding the issue. Riverview High School has a wonderful student population and we know our school will use this incident as an opportunity to have productive conversations about respect for one another.
This mobilization of a large high schools resources because a kid said something racist to his girlfriend would seem like an overreaction, but it is what weve come to expect particularly in the era of social media.
But there is more.
School district spokeswoman Tracey Beeker said the school district is talking with local and national civic organizations to determine the best opportunities for creating a conversation about racial relations.
Because we have not been having a conversation? The district released a full statement on the sign.
Although this message is one students opinion, we take the matter of racial relations and school safety seriously, and we look forward to working with our students and these outside groups to have a meaningful and informative dialogue and expanded curriculum related to this important national topic, the statement reads.
Further, Remember that the American left must ensure there is at least the appearance that America is deeply racist because that is part of their manipulative power structure to ensure division and the shockingly high percentage of black Americans voting Democrat.
This point was inadvertently made clear by one of the schools gun control activists that emerged after Parkland.
The student activist told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune that everyone he had talked to at school was disgusted with the sign. Reasonable enough. But then this:
But I think it is actually important that this issue occurred on some level It shows that racism is still alive and well in our society, and it shows that racism is still alive in my generation and it is something that we as the youth will have to continue to fight against.
See, its important to ensure racial division remains at the forefront. Its doubtful that this student is thinking this way. Hes simply a young guy replying to the situation with what he has imbibed. His motives do not need to be questioned so much as those who have been training generations now to think and act in this nationally destructive way.
A “student activist” from Parkland High School in Broward County, Florida said everyone HE’D talked to was DISGUSTED by the posting.
Just like lynching, they’ve claimed it as their bloody shirt.
The young man can say what he wants. He just can’t yell “FIRE!”
“The young man can say what he wants. He just cant yell FIRE!”
-
And according to Nancy Pelosi he can’t yell “wolf” in a crowded theater either.
.
Yup. Whites picked cotton. Blacks picked cotton. When slavery was outlawed freedmen picked cotton. Their children picked cotton. I suppose Mexicans and Guatemalans pick cotton now, I think it still has to be picked by hand.
I picked cotton and this brings back horrible memories. Where’s my money?
Albert Lee is a friend of my B-I-L.
Nice guy and very talented Guitarist.
Met him a few times and he is as genuine as everyone in the Music Industry says he is. Not a mean bone in his body.
He wrote and performs this Song.
All this time I had no idea he was a Rrraaaccciiisssttt. LOL
Country Boy:
I may look like a city slicker
Shinin’ up through his shoes
Underneath I’m just a COTTON PICKER
Pickin’ out a mess of blues
Show me where I start
Find a horse and cart
I’m just a country boy
Country boy at heart
I may look like a bank teller
Pushing facts in a file
But I’d rather be a haul collar
Shooing foot home in style
Show me where I start
Read /Exchange and Mart/
I’m just a country boy
Country boy at heart
Instrumental
I may look like a city slicker
Shinin’ up through his shoes
Underneath I’m just a COTTON PICKER
Pickin’ out a mess of blues
Show me where I start
Find a horse and cart
I’m just a country boy
Country boy at heart
I wonder if Radio Stations will edit the Song like they did with Dire Straits “Money for nothing”.
Not that one, LOL. Only Hogg and his like-thinking friends.
Nice...
About all I can add (and not to you personally) is that if these two are happy, why go nuts over a poorly thought out comment/invitation?
A few years ago at my oldest sons middle school someone drew a stastika on a bathroom stall wall
They went ape
Rounded up all the redneck kids like my own and had the local lady cop on duty at school interview all of them squeexpzing them with threats
That is till my wife got at em....
Its just nutty
Why not just clean it off and say something about how Nazis killed your ancestors and move on
Schools today are almost all run by shrill women....hens cackling sounding like Kennedy or Cupps arguing
It aggravates my ears
I watch the forty pounds overweight petite cop lady waddle around with all her gear on with her glock way high on her hip
I wonder how much range time does she really get
And is she more stalwart than average girl I know
Its silly
Im six five 240
I can knock her out and grab that gun like nobodys business if I were A homicidal mental guy
I sure agree with cops in schools but put real cops....one that can fight and just has that square up it takes
Our elementary has that
Young war vet....hes on it...and he would die for those kids no question
They love him
I’m at a loss as to how this is a “racist” comment. Racially insensitive, maybe, but not racist.
The textbook definition of racism is “the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.”
Slaves, black or otherwise, were often used to pick cotton in America’s early years, but picking cotton was not exclusively the realm of slave labor.
How is this racist?
Blacks havent picked cotton in 100 years, many havent worked in the last 40 years.
Dumb.
The Left’s war on having a sense of humor continues.
Sad to see so many would join them in the march of humorlessness.
You are correct.
My mother and her brothers and sisters helped their uncle pick cotton back in the 50s, when they were kids.
For some reason, leftists are stupid enough to think that only black people picked cotton.
Too many niggardly people on the left.
Leftists don’t understand how their own set of values makes them in general far more racist than any set of conservatives.
Their attitude towards affirmative action is a good example. They fail to see the corrosive effect that has on the people they claim to want to help.
My mom was one. Half the white people in cotton country who were alive in the 1930s and 1940s picked cotton.
Cotton picking has not the slightest racial intent. I will keep saying it.
Do dah, do dah.
I’m with you, DesertRhino...
I am sick to death of this crap.
