CNN anchor Don Lemon revealed that his network will limit the amount of time it devotes to airing President Donald Trump’s 2020 rallies unfiltered.
“There will be no rallies that run in real time,” Lemon said at a Variety event on Friday. “There will not be so much space for candidates to let them ramble on. The American people will demand that. We will expect more truth from our candidates.”

To some extent they don’t, because they get that “per subscriber” fee from the cable/ satellite provider. Plus the airport fees and other revenue that isn’t based on ratings.

They're going to edit to highlight any gaff and make them the center of the news cycle.

Of course, showing a Trump rally live runs the possibility that some viewers might actually see or hear something they like or makes sense - a totally unacceptable risk to CNN.
With tape delay, CNN can edit out anything that sounds good and only show the embarrassing parts. Gotta keep the "smear Trump agenda" rolling somehow, there's an election coming up!

The legacy media aired many of Trump’s rallies unfiltered because they never thought he could actually win the presidency. And it was great ratings. Trump made them a lot of money.
