Arizona Senator John McCain, who for nearly a year has been diagnosed with brain cancer, has reportedly said that he does not want U.S. President Donald Trump attending his funeral.
Instead, McCain would like former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush reading his eulogy, NBC News said on Saturday based on a conversation with an unnamed source close to the 81-year-old politician.
"I don't know how much longer I'll be here," McCain separately says in an audio clip shared by NPR ahead of the release of his memoir, The Restless Wave.
Trump and McCain, who is a Vietnam war veteran and was a prisoner of war, have clashed over a variety of issues.
Trump controversially claimed during the run-up to the 2016 presidential primaries that McCain was only considered a hero "because he was captured" during the war, with the future president saying he prefers military heros who have not been captured.
McCain was said to be "deeply hurt" by Trump's comments, though in February 2018 his daughter Meghan, co-host of ABC's "The View," said in an interview with Politico that she does not expect Trump to continue criticizing her father's war service.
Mr. Trump] actually reached out to me and we had a very nice conversation and I feel comfortable going forward if he would say or do anything in the realm of talking about my father's war injuries in that nature, I don't think he would go there again," she said at the time.
"I don't think at this point in his administration it would be beneficial to him in any way."
The source close to McCain said that the plan is for Bush and Obama to serve as eulogists at the Arizona senator's funeral service, which is to be held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
McCain, who initially identified as an Episcopalian before starting to attend a Baptist church in Arizona with his family, lost the 2008 presidential general election to Obama.
The two had a strong rivalry during the campaign, with the LA Times pointing to a controversial ad from the Obama campaign at the time that poked fun for McCain not being able to send e-mail, which some noted could be interpreted to be making light of McCain's severe war injuries, which limit his use of a keyboard.
A spokesman for the Obama campaign later clarified that the ad was poking fun at McCain's age and his admittance of not being computer literate, rather than any disability.
McCain and Obama clashed on foreign policy issues during the latter's time as president, though they have also spoken in support of each other on several occasions.
Back in July 2017 following news reports of McCain's brain cancer diagnosis, Obama tweeted: "John McCain is an American hero & one of the bravest fighters I've ever known. Cancer doesn't know what it's up against. Give it hell, John."
Fitting that this will turn into Paul Wellstone Funeral Part II.
>>>If Trump eulogized, he could have explained further about his preference in war heroes.<<<
He could quote the Dr. Seuss “Winners aren’t Losers” Trump book:
This lobster’s a loser,
Throw him in the pot!
I like a lobster
Who doesn’t get caught.
Pence shouldnt go.
A funeral is where you pay your last respects. Since he deserves none and apparently knows it he wanted to get the claim in first that he did’nt want Trump to show up before Trump did’nt show up anyways.
Yep. I left when George Bush came out and said....see you at the signing. When he and McCain were pushing amnesty and were sure they were gonna get it done. I despised McCain before that but that whole thing just cemented it. I was totally deflated when he weaseled his way into the nomination for President.
I hope the teleprompter dies and he’s sent into the ground to the sounds of uh-uh-mauh-uh-you..you..ya.uuuh-you know-uhh uhhh uhhh...
Just look for the long line...
His gravesite will flower like an oasis in the desert from all the watering it will receive.
National Cathedral?
For that vermin?
Pence shouldnt go.

Why? VP Pence is President of the US Senate.
McCain is a member.
Well, the attendance will be shy on, I'm sure Eric Schienderman will have to change his plans as he is no longer an important Democrat.ir
I am curious as to how VP Pence will respond.
McCain’s request for him to represent the WH instead of Trump places Pence in a very awkward position...
If Pence attends, he is standing with McCain against Trump due to McCain’s stated opposition to Trump.
If Pence refuses to attend now because of McCain’s stance, then I think the more appropriate message will be sent.
What Pence should do is announce a third candidate to represent the white house...
Any ideas who that should be?
Liberal AND Communists both. IMO, as time marched on, McCain became every bit the Communist that Maobama is, a sick person who came to value power over decency and love of country. Who better to deliver a eulogy than a fellow traveler?
He still thinks he won a Presidential election I suppose, like algor and Hillary.
I forgot about that parody book. Anyway, Trumps shot on McCain was a long time ago. Both sides should show some graciousness.
Obama? Why not Hanoi Jane?
Is anybody worried that McCain will change parties before he dies? I think he can and, if so, his successor will also have to be a Democrat.
Some draft lines Obummer could say:
A man who had the courage to stand up to integrity.
A man unafraid of blocking tax cuts and immigration enforcement if it meant more face time on CNN.
A man who dared to work undercover to undermine the American way of life as an agent within the GOP.
Trump needs to tweet that rosie is fat during mcstains funeral, thus distracting the entire news media away from his funeral
I guess. When you get right down to it, he lost to the likes of Obama. Think about that, all the reasons not to vote for Obama and McCain still couldnt best him.
You know, either way, the winner of that election was going to be the worst president in U. S. history.
