In a statement on Monday, the Monterey County Sheriffs Office reported a shocking find: a small poppy field on a private plot near a road in Moss Landing, about 15 miles northeast of Monterey, that could produce some four pounds of heroin annually.
Over the weekend the Sheriffs Office Investigations Division eradicated one acre of opium poppies, which contained approximately 27,000 plants of opium poppies and another 16,500 harvested plants, the statement said.
Those plants could have produced a pound and a half of heroin. The plot could have been harvested three times a year.
The street value of a pound and a half of heroin is approximately $45,000, according to the statement.

If Calif. is split in just two, Monterrey is Northern Calif.
The Opium Poppy and the California Golden Poppy are two different plants.
California Golden Poppy does not produce Opium or Heroin.
“Monterey County is not northern California.”
I beg to differ! It is only 60 miles south of San Jose! On the Pacific Coast, the demarkation between the north and south is the tunnel through the coastal hills south of Solvang. San Luis Obispo is considered the Central Coast. SLO is nearly 100 miles south of Monterey.
Where is Monterey then?
Right now they are in full bloom all over the state, and they are one of the most beautiful flowers that there is! And FWIW, they are “protected” by State Law. You are not supposed to pick them!
Hmmm, maybe if it was a really ripe one. They are the same plant...
I was once out strolling one very hot summer’s day
When I thought I’d lay myself down to rest
in a big field of tall grass
I lay there in the sun and felt it caressing my face
And I fell asleep and dreamed
I dreamed I was in a Hollywood movie
The flowers are virtually identical when grown, as one of my old neighbors used to take advantage of and would grow them for opium tea. The flowers were red with black spots and looked identical to the paper Memorial Day ones. I never tried it but he apparently was solidly hooked.
Yes, they look extremely similar. You can’t legally buy seed for Papaver somniferum though.
Know the song, but one does not lay in tall grass in Texas.
Fire ants would have livened it up.
Different species of poppy.
Correct, he was using 'heirloom' seeds, lol.
The Memorial Day poppy is supposed to be a Flanders Poppy, Papaver Rhoeas. The opium poppy is Papaver somniferum. The plants are similar, but the Flanders Poppy isn’t a controlled substance.
And, even though Opium Poppies are illegal, you can still find seeds for them at most garden centers. They’re a popular ornamental.
Papaver somniferumIt is increasingly a misnomer to call Papaver somniferum the opium poppyas many varieties have been bred, and continue to be bred, that do not produce a significant quantity of opium.[3][5] The variety known as Sujata produces no latex at all.[6] Breadseed poppy is more accurate as a common name today because all varieties of Papaver somniferum produce edible seeds. This differentiation has strong implications for legal policy surrounding the growing of this plant.[5]
