Farm Bill Goes Down in House
Rollcall ^ | May 18, 2018

Posted on 05/18/2018 9:41:09 AM PDT by SMGFan

In a major blow to Republican leaders and after a week full of drama and last-minute vote wrangling, the House failed to pass a farm bill Friday, with several Freedom Caucus members voting no in protest to a lack of immediate action on immigration.

The bill failed 198-213. House GOP leaders had been touting the bill as a fulfillment of their campaign promise to overhaul welfare programs. The vote also brings the GOP’s intraparty fissures further into public view. Thirty Republicans joined all Democrats in voting it down.

GOP leadership is going to have to start moving further to the right if they want to get anything done.

Do you want food prices to increase by at least 20%?

Honestly, I am personally OK with that. Limiting immigration will drive up food costs.

Which is why a lot of arm states are very worried about immigration laws.

I think the threats of food price increases are BS.

If we stop ethanol, I know the price of corn is going down.

Believe that.

I have no doubt that food prices will increase at every opportunity. Not because the cost to produce and process rises all that much, but because greedy processors use any and all excuses to raise prices. I remember, years ago, when the cost of chocolate and coffee ballooned. Processors promised the increase was temporary, and prices would come back down as soon as conditions causing their increase, improved. Of course, prices never dropped.

Now I’ll just go put on my armour, and wait for Rinos to attack and accuse me of being anti-capitalist and anti-free enterprise.

Good, they need to recognize that there are many people in the Republican Party that want this illegal immigration problem resolved. Let’s try to give the Freedom Caucus more help in the primary elections.

Absolutely, which will have to start with them at least moving towards the center, and then continuing from there.

What I want is for the market to determine food prices and not the gov't.

I just read that global warming will increase the production of field corn.
I suppose this means more ethanol shoved up our gas tanks..

It is not a threat.

It is economics.

The reason we have the fattest poor people in the history of the world is that we have the lowest cost to produce that food.

Right now, the biggest input is labor.

Labor that is done by illegal aliens.

Go to any packing house and look at the signs. Most are in Spanish, though you are seeing Swahili and South American Indian dialects now also. Why? The companies go to a village and bring them over. Then they make sure they don’t speak English and limit their contact with the rest of the area. Saw it happen a lot as a kid, till enough learned English and their kids hit school.

It is slavery, and I hate it (one reason I oppose illegal immigration) but that is why a dozen eggs costs less than a buck and hamburger is cheap.

If you force companies to hire legal employees, the cost will be pushed on. The losers will be the farmers, who whose costs will go up but will not be able to pass it on to the packers.

Long before open borders, we had a Bacero program where agriculture workers could come in seasonally, do their thing and go home. When I was a pup, we had a Mexican family who attended our church, fell in love with America and applied for citizenship after doing this for a decade or so.

Not one of their kids joined gangs, dealt drugs or lived off welfare. Most of them even married whites, got further education and moved on to other jobs.

The only reason such a program would not work today is because there is no incentive to sign up for it when our borders remain wide open and ignoring the law carries has fewer consequences (and more incentives) than following it.
