A Double Murder From 1987 Was Just Solved Thanks To The Genealogy Website Used For The Golden State Killer

Forensic genealogy has cracked a second major case, less than a month after the arrest of Joseph James DeAngelo, alleged to be the Golden State Killer.
At 11 a.m. PDT in Washington state, the Snohomish County Sheriff announced the arrest of a 55-year-old man from the Seattle area for the 1987 double murder of a young Canadian couple, Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg. He is William Earl Talbott II, a local truck driver.
On Nov. 18, 1987, Cook, 20, and Van Cuylenborg, 18, drove from Saanich, British Columbia, to the Seattle area in a van owned by Cook’s father. It was supposed to be an overnight trip, and when they didn’t return, they were reported missing.
Then, on Nov. 24, Van Cuylenborg’s body was found in a ditch in rural Skagit County, Washington. She had been raped and shot. Cook’s body was found two days later more than 50 miles away, covered with a blue blanket. He had been strangled and beaten.
On Thursday, BuzzFeed News reported that a company called Parabon NanoLabs had loaded DNA data from about 100 crime scenes into a public genealogy database called GEDmatch — finding matches with people estimated to be a suspect’s third cousins or even closer in about 20 cases.
From that search, a DNA sample from Van Cuylenborg’s murder scene gave especially promising leads. “The significant matches were at about the second cousin level,” CeCe Moore, the genealogist working with Parabon, told reporters at a press conference to announce Talbott’s arrest.
This meant that Moore had to draw family trees back to the great-grandparents of the people whose DNA profiles matched with the crime scene sample. Then, looking at descendants of these people, she found that the family trees converged on a couple who had only one son.
That was Talbott. His DNA has since been shown to match the crime scene sample.

“Detective work has sure come a long way in 30 years,” said Laura Baanstra, Cook’s sister.
Investigators said that they still don’t know the motive, or how Talbott met the couple. They appealed for help from anyone who knew Talbott at the time, or may have seen him in November 1987 in the stolen van or with Van Cuylenborg’s camera. “The investigation still has more work to be done,” Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary told reporters.
Family members of the victims said they were relieved that the alleged killer is finally in custody.
“It’s a sense of some justice that’s starting to happen here,” said John Van Cuylenborg, Tanya’s elder brother.
Too late! They already have all the DNA they will ever need.
I would venture to say that, by now, there is hardly anyone left in the U.S.A. who doesn't have at least a single 3rd-cousin whose DNA has been registered.
As explained in the article, all it takes is an approximate match with the DNA of one or two 3rd-cousins for the police to be able to say, "The murderer is to be found amongst this extended family of, say, 100 persons."
Then, all they have to do is approach a few of them and explain, "Someone in your clan is guilty of murder. Wouldn't you like to help us out with a saliva sample?" That means that then they've got even more DNA to go on - perhaps that of a 2nd- or even first-cousin, now. Now they've narrowed the investigation to a single family. And so on...

I've traced my ancestry back (and sideways, i.e., I've also tried to register collateral relatives, like the brothers and sisters of my g-g-g-g-grandparents, and their descendants) a mere six generations - and my "tree" nevertheless contains some 5,000 names. (I estimate that perhaps 20% have "fallen through the cracks" - but I'm no statistician: It could also be as much 80%.)
In that tree, I've found documentary evidence (newspaper reports dating back to the first decade of the 20th century, etc.) of all kinds of micreants. And those are only the ones I've found and documented. There are probably many more whose sins - though public knowledge at the time - I have been unable to "recover." And probably many, many more whose misdeeds were never discovered.
So I think it very bold of you to make such a claim!
Even only among your living third-cousins, I'm sure that you have one or two felons. If we extend our view to encompass your (living) 5th- and 6th-cousins, you are likely to have at least one murderer.
If you've really traced your family back two thousand years (which is patently ludicrous), then you should realize that the decendants of those original progenitors probably include something like 90% of all the people currently living in Europe and North America.
No "disreputable characters," really? It is to laugh!

Innocent people are already ground up in the wheels of justice. DNA has been a huge factor in overturning wrongful convictions.
That was actually true. Not about the samples, but about the companies making the reports. They purposely added 0.1% African because they wanted to be part of this new “triggering” thing.
Correction: There was one prominent company that just added 0.1% African to “trigger” the 1 drop rule people.

They have been collecting DNA samples and creating a data bank from every baby born in hospitals for over 40 years. It was noted that all public schools were creating a National data bank in 80s (yes, even with Ronald Reagan!!!!) Most people are in the Luciferean DNA data bank, even if you “think” you aren’t and the IQ of your children was put into a data bank so they could target them, like they did with Billy Clinton and little Barry Obama-—who were easily corruptible and controlled for life since they had no virtue formation at all. They know EVERYTHING about you if you have IQ over 110 especially or you gain a powerful position.
