imposing a DOE mandate to put pork in our gasoline. I'm only half joking.

You realize that there's absolutely no reason related to chemistry or chemical engineering why this could not be done ...

It would be easy and meaningful to compare what happens to a car made in US sent to China vs a car made in China sent to the US. The comparison could be cars, pork, steel, or whatever. And the country could be China, Mexico, Canada, EU or whatever.

...

it’s NOT that we’re striking out at anyone to be spiteful... we’re striking to even the playing field.

If in fact that is true, it is a presentation that President Trump absolutely SHOULD (MUST?) make ... directly to We the People, over the heads of Big Media.

Don’t laugh too hard. The commercial hog farmers and associated industries are huge in terms of votes and contributions in certain states like, oh let’s just say Iowa for example . If you hurt that voting block , you may not get the turn out necessary to carry that state in 2020.

The majority on here believe tariff’s are a great idea and will actually mean trade that more fairly represents U.S. interests. One of the main contentions being it will increase U.S. manufacturing. I am not sure if the results they desire will happen. I do think reevaluating how our allies treat our exports is needed.

There won’t be lower pork prices. There will be “dumping” of pork products to keep the supply at certain levels. Those commercial pig farmers and commercial pig part processors have a lot of influence on the Hill. You might not care but they will dang well make sure Congress cares.

Well to hell with pig farmers( they probably hump them). They sound like reprobates that deserve a place in hell. F them. They can vote for a Democrat.

What Free Traitors want you to believe is that the supply function is static and no new domestic suppliers will EVER come on line. Despite their best efforts brand new factories are still being built in the USA all the time. Not as many as are closed mind you but the situation is dynamic and not static. With more domestic supply will mean pressure to reduce prices.

To balance the difference in labor costs between the USA and the 3rd world would not take much. Frankly, most manufacturing is not labor intensive. That’s the point of mass production. Maybe 7% of retail prices goes to labor, and that’s for domestic union labor.

You have it backwards Karl Marx was Free Trader.

"But, in general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade."

-- Karl Marx

So now you know. So you wont make that mistake again, right?

We, the U.S., has been manufacturing all along. I just don’t think the large work force envisioned by some will be in demand as more manufacturing becomes a reality. As for reducing prices, you are very likely right. Which makes me wonder, has the Dollar Tree and the like become our modern day version of “Bread and Circuses”?

The U.S. has every reason to protect U.S. interests here and abroad. I am just not sure if tariffs will prove to be beneficial in the long run.

“Price of tortillas to skyrocket! Women and children hardest hit!”

And those “meatless” rice and bean burritos are going to add to Mexico’s methane “contribution” to “greenhouse gases.” The Mexicans will be farting like cattle!

considering the size of the economy, the budget, national debt & national wealth, “trade deficit” numbers appear to be small in comparison.

I remember in the 1980s, William Buckley argued “If every single Japanese person (Japan was the bogeyman in those days) bought an American-made car & every American bought a Japanese car, there still would be a 2:1 trade deficit because of population difference between countries & USA has twice as many people as Japan”,

With Mexico, we have both a big population difference & a wealth difference, as well.

This is not to say that NAFTA was a good treaty. I remember back in the early 1990s when certain Republicans such as John McCain argued that we needed a north American union to compete with the newly formed European Union, treating Mexico like a close friend & our NATO allies as feared rivals....when actually, the creation of the European Union was meant to make Europe more like the USA & was a golden opportunity to have the USA form a monetary & trade alliance with Europe (gold standard, anyone?) that would have allowed NATO to expand & would have kicked Russia when it was down & buried it as a power forever. Just goes to show you that John McCain has been a bad senator....forever.

We have too much immigration from just one country....MEXICO......& chain migration is a terrible idea. It needs to stop. Mexicans come to America & want Mexican beef, Mexican soap, Mexican candy, Mexican soda. The more Mexican immigration we allow (which violates equal protection...and “amnesty” is an illegal ex post facto legislative pardon which violates equal protection of those already deported and those waiting in line to legally immigrate),,,the more new Mexican immigrants will demand Mexican goods they were used to in Mexico.
Replacing payroll taxes & the corporate income tax by something like a VAT would help more than tariffs do. According the the U.S, Supreme Court, the corporate income tax is an EXCISE TAX, ie a tax on goods, ie a tax on consumption........but unfortunately, the corporate income tax taxes EXPORTS, but not IMPORTS. A VAT would do the opposite & tax imports, but not exports.

They are always beneficial in the long run that is why EVERY other country has higher import tariffs than the USA. It is also the founding fathers were all protectionists, every one.
