Obama: Consider a universal basic income

In his first major speech since leaving office, former President Barack Obama endorsed the idea of providing a universal basic income.

Speaking at the Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture in South Africa on Tuesday, Obama raised the notion of guaranteed income as a way to reduce what he called "yawning disparities" in wealth, education, and security across different socioeconomic groups.

"It's not just money that a job provides," said Obama. "It provides dignity and structure and a sense of place and a sense of purpose. So we're going to have to consider new ways of thinking about these problems, like a universal income, review of our workweek, how we retrain our young people, how we make everybody an entrepreneur at some level. But we're going have to worry about economics if we want to get democracy back on track."

He additionally called on the rich to support higher taxation, saying that "you don't have to take a vow of poverty just to say 'let me help out a few of these folks.'"

” The joke was, “Why don’t they just skip the middle man and send everyone a check every month to vote democrat, it would be cheaper and easier.”

Charles Murray, the Conservative icon adamantly agrees.

It’s cheaper and reduces the power of the state.

In fact, as far back as the 1850’s Karl Marx was ADAMANTLY opposed to a UBI.

“What a surprise, Obama is a communist! “

What he proposes here was strongly opposed by the founder of Communism, Karl Marx.

Having recently visited South Africa I can attest to the disparity of wealth there. We stayed in a suburb of Johannesburg called Sandton, which is written up on wikipedia as "the richest square mile in Africa".Within walking distance of our hotel was a BMW/Bentley dealership while,OTOH,no more than a 10 minute drive from us you find classical African poverty.

Who knows if "guaranteed income" is the answer for South Africa? But it sure as hell isn't the answer for us.

For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the food they eat. 13 And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good. 2 Thessalonians 3 10-13

Seize all the wealth of the billionaire Democrat donors and Hollywood elite and distribute it to anyone who lost their job because of Globalism. See how he likes them cookies.

It’s cheaper and reduces the power of the state.

Explain to me how a UBI would be cheaper and reduce power of the state?

What happens when Mr. druggie spends his $500 in 2 days?

A good socialist state would continue to support him with welfare, food stamps, etc, all paid for by 'the rich' and others.

I would also think that this would increase the power of the state, as so many rely on the monthly check.

I hear ya- this rampant unemployment and low workforce participation rates are just killing us. But seriously, there aren’t enough skilled people to fill the jobs vacancies we currently have. And no, they are skilled 60-70K per year jobs that are going unfilled; not burger flippers

I think a universal basic voter ID is more important, at this point in US history.

My unanswered question is—. Is the universal basic income over and above, and in addition to, all of the other public assistance programs which provide benefits to the poor?

Or is this concept intended to replace those programs, and give people a minimal amount of money which they need to manage responsibly?
