'Pinochet did no wrong': Who is Pinochet?

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A number of Patriot Prayer supporters, including group leader Tusitala "Tiny" Toese, wore t-shirts at the Saturday protest in Portland that read: Pinochet did nothing wrong.

Who is Pinochet?

Augusto Pinochet was the leader of the military junta that overthrew Chile's President Salvador Allende on September 11, 1973. For the next 16 years, Pinochet was the head of Chile's military government.

Information from Brittanica.com

Thousands of his regime's opponents were tortured and during his nearly 17 years in charge he moved to crush Chile's liberal opposition. During the first 3 years of his regime, about 130,000 people were arrested.

"Pinochet was determined to exterminate leftism in Chile and to reassert free-market policies in the country’s economy. His junta was widely condemned for its harsh suppression of dissent."

For the record, I watched the live video feed of the event by KOIN, the same source for this article. The videographer was following Tusitala “Tiny” Toese for quite a while and getting many close-up shots of his t-shirt, front and back. It was fairly obvious to me that they were trying to focus on his t-shirt.

“Yes, quite sad on your part. I assume you also equate the lack of political freedom in Singapore (hint, there is none) with the lack of freedom Cuba - really no difference between the two countries, since neither has reached your demanded level of ‘freedom’.”

Singapore has a democratically elected government with opposition parties. Not the “freest” place on Earth by a long shot. Frankly it’s a paranoid little city-state run by control freaks. But it is not Cuba, which has no opposition party of political dissent allowed period, nor Chile under Pinochet which also did not.

So no, I’m not going to champion Singapore anymore than those other two places. I’ll leave that for the phonies around here that apparently like those types of systems....because people there are economically well-off or whatever bullshot rationale they come up with.

Pinochet saved Chile form people like Che Guevarra.

The communists only got about a third of the vote, in a plurality. They would have shortly started sending out death squads to eliminate opposition, so as to cement their control. Pinochet saved Chile from a bloodbath.

The Jimmy Carter types here are the reason we (the west) lost Rhodesia, SA, and are losing Wester Europe.

Have no doubt they champion murderous, terrorist thugs like Nelson Mandela.

Fujimori; made Peru “safe for normal people. He saved the country at the cost of his own.”

It’s totally shameful how the government of Peru continues to treat Fujimori.
Three of the last presidents serving on either side of Fuji have been grossly corrupt. All caught up to some degree in the Odebrecht scandal. One ex-president took refuge in France for fear of being locked up. Another fellow and his “dragon lady” wife were both locked up for a period. Most recent president resigned in the face of overwhelming evidence of corruption. New guy appears willing to do the right thing. We’ll see...

” and then will either tacitly or openly excuse despots they agree with and pine for it to exist here.”

Just enshrine them into hallowed legend like they did Lincoln.

“Pinochet saved Chile from a communist takeover, put market reforms and economic policies in place that started Chile on the road to becoming the economic jewel of South America, and then VOLUNTARILY stepped down and reinstated free elections. Do some research from sources other than wikipedia.”

Absolutely 100% correct.

Lincoln ran for reelection in the middle of a civil war, almost lost, and wasn’t looking to remain past his 2nd term.

If he had led a coup to bump off James Buchanan, then maybe you might have something there?

Bush 41 of CIA fame, his brother Jonathan ran Riggs Bank for a time. Pinochet was a side issue to Saudi accounts investigated post 2001 attack, found to be moving money. Banking operation controlled by CIA?

What's left out of history are Chilean's reasons to overthrow Allende, apart from American anticommunism. Allende was wrecking the economy, had death squads killing land owners and confiscating their land, and had thirty thousands communist agents running training camps. It was clear Allende was planning his own revolution. His opponents had two choices: hold a coup first, or pick what to wear when they were lined up against a wall.

He absolutely did. No one wants the Chilean example here but Pinochet is what happens when progressivism goes unchecked. The pendulum swings back to the right like a ****ing sledgehammer.

“A 2004 Senate investigation into money laundering turned up evidence that Pinochet and associates laundered money for years through Riggs Bank.”

I don’t believe that he was guilty of any of that crap. That was just the left going for revenge after he stepped down.

Total fake news crapola.

“It really gets under my skin too that people on our side preach liberty, and the constitution, and then will either tacitly or openly excuse despots they agree with and pine for it to exist here.”

You need to look into the difference between authoritarian government and totalitarian government.

It’s a damned good bargain to put up with authoritarian government temporarily to avoid permanent totalitarian government.

There are times when totalitarian government can only be avoided through authoritarian measures. Pinochet’s halo shines more brightly for every commutard he killed.

It is false to call Pinochet a despot. He was a hero.

Free helicopter rides!

Personally, I am sick to death of the moral handwringers who play the moral equivalence idiocy when it comes to fighting back against totalitarianism.

“Jesus Christ.”

No, he’s right. It seems that you bought everything fake news put out about Pinochet.

It behooves those of us who pursue conservatism to take another look at the fake news narrative on...well, on everything.

“No, he’s right”

No he is not! And I’ve yet to hear any of Pinochet’s fangirls on FR tell me where I’m wrong! lots of pathetic attempts to dance around it, though. When you guys can pull that off, then get back to me, otherwise I’m going to continue to see you phonies as dictator apologists.

Dont waste my time going on about “fake news” or “phantom liberal narratives” you think I’m basing this on.

No American conservative ought to champion despotism, period.
