'A baby cannot provide ... consent': Calif. lawmakers denounce infant intersex surgeries

The California State Legislature approved a resolution on Tuesday denouncing medically unnecessary surgeries for intersex children.

"Intersex children should be free to choose whether to undergo life-altering surgeries that irreversibly — and sometimes irreparably — cause harm," the resolution states.

SCR 110 was introduced by Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat whose district includes San Francisco, and it was supported by Equality California, a statewide LGBTQ advocacy group, and interACT, an intersex youth advocacy organization.

We did it. Today interACT, @eqca, and @Scott_Wiener celebrate the PASSING of the first legislation in U.S. history to name the harms of non-consensual medical interventions on #intersex people.

In a statement provided to NBC News, Wiener said the resolution “recognizes that California’s intersex community is a part of our state’s diversity and should be embraced.”

“These surgeries should be performed only with informed consent by the person whose life will be permanently impacted,” Wiener stated. “A baby cannot provide that consent.”

“These surgeries can have significant negative impacts on people’s lives, particularly if the gender chosen by the physician and parents is different from the child’s ultimate gender identity,” Wiener continued.

Does this mean infants can't have life saving surgeries without consent too?

Perhaps it means that if I’m in an accident and taken unconscious to a hospital, the doctors cannot do anything for me until I wake up and tell them to go ahead and save me.

Guess abortions are no longer allowed. The baby can’t choose whether to live or die.

What does this bill REALLY do?

The fact that “it was supported by Equality California, a statewide LGBTQ advocacy group, and interACT, an intersex youth advocacy organization”, means that it’s suspect.

I think it addresses hermaphroditism and children born with ambiguous genitalia. There is always a chromosome test done on the baby to determine the gender. I’m not sure exactly what they are doing here, but it will likely not turn out well for babies, if it is supported by LGBTQXYZ people.

my guess is it has to do with people born with both genitalia - hermaphrodites. Usually someone makes a determination as to which genitals are most potentially functional or they decide which sex to raise the infant as. I think leaving both there will only create more problems.

It worries me as well.

Maybe the ultimate goal is to take gender decisions away from parents altogether?

For example, what if the State decided your child is a girl, whether you like it or not?

Or later on, if your minor child expresses the desire to change gender, and the State agrees, you have to comply...

Bingo ! The key phrase here is “ which genitals are most potentially functional”. The decision to raise a child as the parents think they should be, is counter-californian.

It has to be a decision based on which genitals are likely to be functional. And that has to be done at the infant ages for the healing to occur properly, for hormones to be measured and fostered and finally to decide if a hormone treatment is to be used.

Never EVER assume that California has the health of a baby in mind. It never ever does and never ever will. What this law does is prevent such care from being performed because of it’s impact on the LGBTQ49((:-) community.

Like how dead people as a group denounce cures for hearing loss, genetic therapies and treatments because it puts the “hearing impaired culture” on the endangered list. Seriously, they call the cure genocide.

This is not good news. Never assume it is.

This is done with the nod of the LGBTQ groups. So it’s not in the interest of the child at all.

It’s in the interest of bumping up their numbers.

well I never assumed they had the interest of the infant in mind, especially when the LGBTQ... community is involved, theirs is always self promotion and community acceptance.

Those dead people, just because they can’t benefit, always complaining, and for what? They’re the only group whose numbers increase with genocide.

(Sorry, couldn’t help myself)

I had to read it a couple of times, too, to know what they were getting at.

Sounds like if a child is born with truly ambiguous genitalia, hermaphroditic, or even with some easily fixable kind of defect of the reproductive organs, he cannot get it fixed. Acknowledging a "penis," after all, would be "assigned a sex" without consent.

Trangenderism, a mental problem, and infants born with indistinct genitilia are two seperate things. The former requires psychiatric therapy from a young age, to remove the obsession that denies the sex identified by the DNA, and the latter requires surgery to honor the sex identified by the DNA.
