My wife and mother in law went through the storm in Southport Florida. Massive roof damage, wall blown out, and windows blown in. Very scary. I talked with the insurance Adjustor today and he said the wind damage is much more extensive than Katrina. If anyone can get water to Southport it would be great. They are hurting and most of the supplies are in Panama City and Lynn Haven.

It’s really bad..Far worse than Andrew. I am helping with Communications on 3950 KHZ and 7251 KHZ. No power, no sewer, no food, no clothes, no nuttin’. Prayers for the effected would be greatly appreciated. Hams able to copy both sides of traffic may be helpful. I’m thinking a donation to Red Cross would be best at the moment.

Had this happen near my house. A “Red Pine” stand of trees (hundreds) was laid flat by I don’t know what.

It might have been a Derecho.

Your ignorant post on the other thread stated:

From what I've seen of Michael damage, I'm inclined to believe that had it been 30 years ago, it might have been rated as a mid-strong Cat 3 or a weak Cat 4.

Here for description of the winds and variable conditions from Andrew in ‘92. I post this not to diminish Michael but to illuminate how these storms operate:

Yeah.

In Mexico Beach, the houses that remain standing were probably build under the post Andrew building codes.

You beat me to it. Good call. The construction education "photo of the year." What is the first thing anyone thinks when they see this? Have the engineer, architect, and builder design and build a bunch of them.

Require some standards. So many of those (former) buildings look flimsy. You're in hurricane country, folks!

Insurance companies might want to take a look at this situation, too. I really would rather not keep paying my insurance to rebuild your junk houses.

House in decent shape, but why is it there? Ask the people who built the lone house in the first picture.

Tough houses can be built. You might have to pay more. Did you enjoy living in a motel for a year while your new junky one one is being built? Yes, it was a nasty hurricane. Have you forgotten the house in the first photo? Not luck or a fluke. That house is saying to the hurricane, "Is that all you got, wimp?" (Or it's a photoshop.)

Similar photos from earlier storms have been pictures of homes built using SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) instead of the conventional stick framing. SIPs are built using a foam core with a sandwich of plywood or similar material, typically 4x8 feet sized panels. Such houses are considerably stronger and offer more resistance to wind forces. I have no idea how this home was constructed.

We went through Katrina - have been praying for these poor people since before Michael hit and are gathering donations...my wife has a friend that was on the edge of it and her house is standing with a few others but tornadoes ran on both sides and took out a lot of their neighborhood.

Have seen few folks making quips that make light of what happened and decided they are clueless idiots who have never endured such....it took me 2 years to repair my house because there were only fly-by-night contractors swooping in for a carrion feast and I wasted some cash on a couple and decided that they would give me $1k worth of work for every $5K they did - and I would still need to redo a lot.....the wind and water have stopped but the grueling experience is just getting started.
