WASHINGTON A caravan of thousands of Honduran migrants is headed north in hopes of crossing the U.S. border. You may have heard some scary things about it. What's true and what's false? Here are five allegations bouncing around the internet that are definitely "alternative facts."
MYTH 1: It's being funded by Democrats.
Trump said at a campaign rally on Thursday that "a lot of money has been passing to people" traveling north from Honduras. A Republican from Florida, Rep. Matt Gaetz shared a short video that Trump later promoted of migrants being given cash and suggested that they were being funded by left-leaning activist and investor George Soros.
THE FACTS: There is no evidence the caravan is being led by anyone other than Hondurans.
Bartolo Fuentes, a former Honduran lawmaker and social activist, originally got the word out to Hondurans, calling them to meet at the San Pedro Sula bus station to leave the country. Guatemalan police arrested Fuentes last week in the middle of a crowd, shortly after Trump threatened to cut off funding to Guatemala and Honduras if they did not stop the caravan. The caravan now continues without Fuentes, with a handful of different leaders making logistical decisions about when to depart each city.
Immigration experts attribute the size of the caravan and the timing of its travel to cooler weather, as well as gang violence and political turmoil in Honduras after the country's contested presidential election last year.
"The reason that the caravans have been organized are to help protect Central American refugees and migrants as they make the perilous journey through Mexico and to highlight their petitions for asylum," said Elizabeth Oglesby, a professor at the University of Arizona's Center for Latin American Studies.
MYTH 2: "Criminals and unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in."

Wait a minute. The very first item doesn’t address the funding question at all.
Did I miss something?
Saw the video of someone handing every person in line CASH...Must of fell out of sky..
Typical modern reporters who do undercover work to get access to information.
Five lies about the Honduran military invasion
LOL. So the “mother of Boo the pug” and the “cat lady” are now our mainstream news sources? Oy vey
Well, I guess NBC told Donald Trump!!! (Does anybody besides my 96-year-old mother watch this crap?)
Yeah, I caught that that too. Slight of hand by the author. Typical Leftist tactic to redirect the subject.
Keep in mind that it is NBC.
Oh and I’ll gladly have a friendly lunch with Daniela. If she’s buying.
NBC = NPC
and the BS about Homeland being able to use biometrics at checkpoint in Mexico
How effing stupid is NBC?
The media who sent reporters to dig in Palin’s trash cans, are unable to discover who is funding the caravan.
no- its the way the left wing media lies..
I was surfing the DUmp earlier. (Yes I took a shower afterwards) They believe Trump has funded this invasion. They really do. They believe Trump is using this to gin up anger and support amongst his supporters and will turn this into the greatest Red Tide ever.
Idiots. But they may have a point. Even though this is a Soros tactic, it is backfiring greatly against the Rats. All the DUmmies could do was bitch and moan about the support Trump is pulling from the countries involved.
Not one of them could address the real threat these invaders would pose against them and the US.
Myth my azz. Did they do background checks on everyone?
NPCs handing out the updated script to other NPCs.
Isn’t it NPC news now?
They’re all just poor oppressed women and children who have been walking the entire time. Everyone feel sorry for them.
