He apologized for the picture appearing on his page, calling the image "offensive" and "racist," but said that he had nothing to do with the preparation of the yearbook, nor did he buy it.

He said that while he did not attend that party where the picture was taken, he did attend another party the same year in which he said he "darkened my face as part of a Michael Jackson costume."

He also said that he did not expect Virginians to believe him immediately or to forgive his actions right away: "I am just asking for that ability to demonstrate that the person I was is not the man I am today.

I was in the car at 5:15pm driving home when I heard Mike Opelka on WMAL saying that Gov Northam was attempting to do the Moonwalk during his presser today. This story was circulating before the election last year. Dan Bongino said he received it last October but sat on it because he couldn’t verify it was Northam

Which year? Northam was elected in 2017.

After he publicly admitted to and apologized for appearing in the picture, an aide said to him, “Governor, don’t be stupid. No one can prove that’s you in the picture! Deny!”

I think you've hit it exactly. Maybe the other people involved in the photo (the other guy and/or the photographer) are his close friends or are dead, and he's reasonably confident that no one is going to step forward at this point and say, "I was there when that photo was taken. Ralph's the one in the Klansman outfit."

It's an insane defense, though, because if it's not him, WTF is it doing on his yearbook page?
