Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told Breitbart News Sunday that when former Rep. Paul Ryan was House speaker, he tricked President Donald Trump into believing a spending bill with wall funding could not pass through the House of Representatives.
Congressman Gohmert, a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, told Breitbart News Deputy Political Editor Amanda House that former Speaker Paul Ryan told Trump in the run-up to the December government shutdown battle that a spending bill with wall funding would not pass through the GOP-controlled House.
House Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows (R-NC), a staunch Trump ally, correctly predicted that House Republicans had the votes to pass through the House. The House passed a spending bill with $5.7 billion in wall funding in December with 217 in favor of the legislation.

I can't say if he let the President know directly but I heard him (at least a couple of times), when asked directly during interviews, say that the problem was in the House "leadership."
You’re right. That’s where he is, and he is all we have.
I view him standing in the center of a crowd of Republicans, everyone one of them wielding a long dagger for him, except of course, the ones standing in front of him. Their long daggers are concealed behind their backs.
I think he has very few true, actual allies, if any.
I direct no anger at Mr. Trump. He’s a good man standing in the way of an ocean of evil.
I am disgusted with my party. I mean I am disgusted ;/
If true it doesn’t make Trump look very smart. After all, Ryan had plotted to deny him the nomination, and then take his place on the ticket, but only pulled back when people like us and other grassroots conservatives made it perfectly clear that we would never vote for Ryan for President, AND we would also not vote down-ballot. And it was the down-ballot Republicans that got the message and made Ryan stand-down.
Trump must know all this...yet still believed Ryan on the wall? I hope not...I guess.
I blame the chicken-$hit members of the House who failed to police their own party members, and who let Ryan go unchecked, and unchallenged during his time as Speaker. The worse thing they could have done was to replace Boehner with his carbon copy Ryan. Two useless twits.
I doubt that Trump believed that Ryan ‘couldn’t’ get wall legislation through the House.
More that Trump knew that Ryan WOULDN’T get wall legislation through the House.
But had to play along with the song and dance.
It doesn’t matter too much if Ryano tricked DJT somehow. That same RINO had the power to keep it from coming to a vote.
Paul Ryan is a punk. He said he was conservative, but actions belie his rhetoric. Screw you Paul Ryan, you are part of the problem. You could have stood shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Newt Gingrich and Winston Churchill but you turned out to be a wimp. Hopefully your children never figure that out.
Hindsight. Immediately after his election, trump should have got a commitment from turtle and ryan to fund the wall. In the absence of that commitment and quick action, he should have declared the emergency February 1, 2017.
True, I could buy that...oh well, it’s not like we have much choice as to who to support.
Actually, if you look at the Border Patrol apprehension numbers, things were very quiet in 2017...nothing like now, or during the trains of 2014.
Having said that, Trump should have NEVER waited 2 years to shut down the government for the wall...he lost credibility and he lost the issue over it. I don’t what the hell he was thinking by kicking it down the road.
At least Trump is doing his level best to keep his promises, even if some of us may be a little frustrated that he’s not quite as confrontational as we’d like him to be.
Unlike every GOP quisling since 1988.
I will always really enjoy a few things about Lian Ryan: him running away from his own house when confronted by protestors in front of the WALL AROUND IT; literally running down the street.
Then, there’s the time he spoke in Indiana or someplace, with two muscle men flanking, and, when people started speaking up and wanting him to be accountable, he finished a couple of sentences, backed away and went off into the sunset. Like in the movies.
The man’s a coward.
House passed it in the lame duck. Reason is was killed was the same reason it wasn’t tried from Jan 20, 2016 thru Dec 31, 2018: the filibuster. Democrats were never going to budge, especially with media propagandizing for them. We tried the longest shutdown in history, and it didn’t work.
You can fault McConnell for not trying to abolish it, but with only 51 votes including McCain, Murk, Collins and actually a handful of respected Senators supporting it, it’s going to be around until it’s the last thing standing between a future unified Democrat government and one of their big ticket wish list items.
That will be the only silver lining for whenever the Democrats will be in power again. The problem is that they’ll probably use it to pass a big amnesty and lock us out of the political process for good.
Ryans alma mater and man crush were both Kenyon.
How does Trump keep going? Enemies everywhere.
And both Ryan and Mitch knew all about the hoaxes Russia crap. They were briefed many times. And never told Trump he was under investigation.
