Naval Base Kitsap is a U.S. Navy base located on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington state. It was created in 2004 by merging the former Naval Station Bremerton with Naval Submarine Base Bangor.

The Mission of Naval Base Kitsap is to serve as the home base for the Navy’s fleet throughout West Puget Sound and to provide base operating services, including support for both surface ships and Fleet Ballistic Missile and other nuclear submarines having their home ports at Bremerton and Bangor.

Naval Base Kitsap is the third-largest Navy base in the U.S. It features one of the U.S. Navy's four nuclear shipyards, one of two strategic nuclear weapons facilities, the only West Coast dry dock capable of handling a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and the Navy's largest fuel depot.

This installation is home to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. In addition to performing drydock and overhaul services for active naval vessels, it is also home to an inactive ship facility for several decommissioned warships, including aircraft carriers. Naval Base Kitsap is also home to Naval Hospital Bremerton.

These facilities provide critical support to the National Defense Strategy. NBK is also the home of several Research, Development, Testing & Evaluation (RDT&E) commands that ensure the Navy’s technological advantage. NBK and its supported commands produce substantial economic benefits to its surrounding communities.

My folks met at the Bremerton Navy Yard in 1950 - he was a WWII Navy veteran employed as a draftsman and she worked the tool room counter. He winked at her and they dated, married for 42 years, raised two sons and have both since passed. I live about 35 miles from Bremerton myself.

How to Find Peace

Bible in a Year : Job 22–24; Acts 11

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. Colossians 3:15

“What do you think about peace?” my friend asked as we ate lunch together. “Peace?” I said, puzzled. “I’m not sure—why do you ask?” He answered, “Well, as you jiggled your foot during the church service I wondered if you’re agitated about something. Have you considered the peace God gives to those who love Him?”

That day some years ago, I was a bit hurt by my friend’s question, but it started me on a journey. I began exploring the Bible to see how God’s people embraced this gift of well-being, of peace, even in the midst of hardship. As I read Paul’s letter to the Colossians, I chewed over the apostle’s command to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts (Colossians 3:15).

Paul was writing to a church he’d never visited but had heard about from his friend Epaphras. He was concerned that as they encountered false teaching, they were losing the peace of Christ. But instead of admonishing them, Paul encouraged them to trust Jesus, who would give them assurance and hope (v. 15).

We all will encounter times when we can choose to embrace or refuse the rule of Christ’s peace in our hearts. As we turn to Him, asking Jesus to dwell in us, He will gently release us from the anxiety and cares that weigh us down. As we seek His peace, we trust that He will meet us with His love.

By Amy Boucher Pye

Reflect & Pray

What situations or relationships weigh on your mind and heart? How can you ask Jesus to bring you His peace?

Jesus, You give peace that passes all understanding. Help me embrace Your peace in every area of my life.

Great road trip, lauren!
Just steer clear of Seattle.
It's covered in garbage.

Two years ago my son who is a Sr. Chief, was able to give my wife and I a tour of his ship the USS Nimitz, which got back from its major deployment two months prior. It was awesome, so huge. Now he’s back in Hawaii for a second and last tour, before retirement.
