I call BS. I live in a very small burg-—intersection of 2 federal highways, or it wouldn’t even be on the map.

We have a very nice Senior Center...open 5 days a week- 8-4 or so. 1 meal a day served at $2 and if you cannot afford that, they do not hassle you. ALL the towns around us have their own Senior Centers, also.

Big screen TV. Exercise equipment. 4 hi speed computers. Books in a reading area & puzzles to do. 2 pool tables. Quilting group meets there every Thursday & quilts are raffled off at Christmas dinner to raise more money for other items. Holidays are special meals. Thanksgiving—Christmas—Valentine’s Day—Easter—July 4th— Halloween. A ‘birthday dinner’ once day each month. Anyone with a birthday in that month gets a ticket for a free meal. Bingo 2 or 3 days a week. There are persons there each & every day & they have plenty of ‘socialization’.

I live alone-—and have for most of the years since I graduated high school....62 years ago. I have neighbors who help keep an eye on each other, as I am not the only one who lives alone.

The Federal Government is just trying to find more ways to spend money & to interfere in our chosen lifestyles.

As you age through life it’s pretty much known your life narrows quite naturally. I resent the fact it’s called isolation or that lonliness is even a part of it.....or that the elderly are “prone” to this.

People can and do find they enjoy their own company, that they choose to enjoy their long term relationships that matter, and these do not mean ‘going out’ and seeing them face to face.

Yes, there are those who do suffer but generally they have not learned how to enjoy their own company and find interests they can do on their own. And even pure laziness to get out of the easy chair and just go for a day trip with no destination in mind...which always proove interesting, be it by bus or car.

Heh.. I can relate with every point you made.
Having a Border collie/Sheltie mix is like having the perfect person in my life.. Makes me walk at least a mile a day.. Reminds me when I forget Anything in our routine.. is smart, patient and kind.
If the government wants to truly make people happy, they should hand out Border collies.

The next step in the nanny state. The government will assign everyone ‘a friend’.

````
First of course they “friend” will be supplied free of charge;
Second, there will be preview process;
Followed by an annual review when the ‘friend’ can be swapped out for a better model, etc
It’s important to keep the government out of our personal lives at all costs. What will the government do if you refuse to accept the “help”? will they put you away in some stinking gulag somewhere?
Mrs Afterguard are both pretty much alone since our kids and grandkids live in other states and they have lives of their own which do not permit them a lot of free time to visit us, which is okay with us. We know they are succeeding and building family ties of their own. Having said all that she has a small clique of ladies that she does lunch with monthly and communicates almost daily via text msgs, some of which are genuinely hilarious. I have a group of geezers like me that have worked together for the last 25+ years and we play golf at least once a week when the wx permits.
The best companion we have is each other. We recently celebrated 50 years together and we still enjoy each others company much more that anyone elses. We are both mostly well but do have some relatively med issues related to our ages, and we have modestly adequate material and financial assets that we want for nothing and allows us to do what we refer to as”day trips” around our region’s vacation, tourist, and shopping areas once or twice a month. I thank God for her everyday and I think she still like me enough to stick around for a while longer. Yes, I am a lucky man.
So keep the government out of our lives.
164 million lonely people? Just think how much worse the problem would be if guns had not killed 150 million people since 2007.
People who divorce never realize the full impact on ‘other’ family members....no matter how hard you try those relationships fade, reasons vary but the end result is the same...distance.
Exactly. not only enjoy solitude, I luxuriate in it. Give me a book, my music, a recliner, access to a laptop and a phone and I am perfectly happy.
You're considered to be dangerous. A threat to the sheeple.
What if you socially isolate and enjoy it?
Welcome to the club, brother. I mean welcome to stay over there and I’ll stay over here.
Obviously children of divorce are adversely affected for life.
But even the adults who leave often find themselves alone for the rest of their lives.
In 2018, a national poll
Polls are so fake and that many use them as a springboard belies any value in the “results”
The inference in this one is particularly blatant, were any of you on this thread asked or is this just the usual crap extrapolation based on a focus group or less how we all feel
Geez, some minds are so easily swayed
first thing I thought of when I saw this was bureaucrats thinking up creative ways to get seniors OUT of their houses and into ‘group’ homes, using a medical excuse.
I’m curious if you know how such a well-stocked senior center such as yours is funded.
What if you socially isolate and enjoy it?
No kidding...the older I get, the more I am annoyed with most people. Indecisive, boring, selfish, uninformed but highly opinionated and immersed in the fads of the moment but ignorant of history. I'd rather stay home alone with a book and amuse myself with my garden and music.
My home is my fallout shelter from stupid people.
“Some people just happen to enjoy their own company...it’s that simple really...they have their interests and have learned to be quite content with a limited amount of outside interaction.”
Yes, I love keeping myself company. I’m a great conversationalist and always have the right answer for myself. We never disagree on which music to listen to or which movie to watch.
All in all I’m more fun than anyone I know
