New York state has 10 times the COVID-19 cases California has. Why?
San Fran Chronicle ^ | March 27 2020 | Erin Allday

New York’s coronavirus outbreak has violently erupted over the past few days, and the state is now driving the national epidemic — while on the West Coast, public health experts are wondering if an early and aggressive response saved California from a similar fate.

California reported some of the earliest coronavirus cases in the United States in late January. And in the first week of March, California and New York were neck and neck on cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. But over the past week, New York case counts have doubled every few days, and the state now has nearly 10 times the cases California does: 38,000 to 4,200.

Infectious-disease experts say early maneuvers in California, especially in the Bay Area — first discouraging people from gathering in crowds and then ordering them to shelter in place — may have had a dramatic impact, even if they came only a few days ahead of those in New York.

But other factors may also be in play. New York is testing far more people — three times as many as California — and therefore identifying more cases, for example. And it’s possible that what’s happening 3,000 miles away could be California’s future.

“New York may just be three or four days in front of us. We’re going to see an increase in the number of cases here as well,” said Dr. Warner Greene, a senior investigator at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco who specializes in HIV but is studying the new coronavirus. “Days matter — they really matter. You think you’re fine, you’re absolutely fine, but this thing is just waiting to explode.

“But we went into shelter in place quicker; we got people apart quicker,” Greene said. “That could be a contributing factor ...

Maybe there are more Hispanics in California. It hasn’t gripped Mexico. Maybe it is because they eat jalapeños and fresh foods more available in California than in processed pizzas, and pretzels in NYC?

Top bureaucrats in NYC were telling people to come there for Chinese New Year, and not to worry about coronavirus. NY didn’t take it seriously until too late.

They even went out of their way to celebrate the Chinese new year in order to spite Trump and his xenophobic policies!

It’s true here in Washington state and in California Trump’s travel ban on Chinese nationals held up.

He tried to ban the Iranians flying into New York but some judge overturned that band so Iran kept flying in.

Up to 15% of all viral respiratory infections will test positive for Coronavirus... If all 40 million of the current season’s respiratory infection cases were tested, 3 to 6 million would test positive for Coronavirus...

New Yorkers commute in crowded subways and buses, and walk crowded streets.

I think that is a very good point. Trains in and out of there are packed and the subways and buses are like sardine cans. Most streets below 59th are usually packed with people.

My last day in there was March 13th and I've had no symptoms so I guess my self-quarantine is a success.

Cuomo’s incompetence. He should have acted much more forcefully instead of just holding press conferences.

no- i live in NY and my in laws are italian immigrants. Most who travel between the two countries for pleasure purposes do so in the summer- not the winter. Italians are staying in place here for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

1) NYC is much more condensed than SF or LA
2) you have lots more travelers from lots of other countries
3) NYC its a craphole
4) we had these issues recently, when Hasdics who did not want to vaccinate their kids and measles broke out...not that you can vaccinate from the chinese flu- but its the same type of mentality. There are also issues with whooping cough and TB in schools due to illegals.

Because rat cages have more room than a typical New York apartment?

The ones at the top have a sixth floor walk-up cage.

Could it be the BioGen “infected” employee going back to China after spreading the virus here...

https://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3826441/posts?q=1&;page=1#1

Or could it be that DUmocrats lobbied their favorite judges to lift travel bans and helped to spread virus...

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/03/11/democrat-response-to-coronavirus-end-trumps-travel-bans-on-china-iran/

That needs to be on the FRONT PAGE of every newspaper, but they have an agenda!
