Everywhere Donald Trump looks, he sees political fires that threaten to engulf his presidency.
he Supreme Court has handed him two stunning rebukes in the last week -- one on gay rights and the other blocking the President from ending the DACA program.
Senate Republicans have shown increasing willingness to buck Trump. On Wednesday every GOP senator wore a mask at a press conference. Sen. Lamar Alexander insisted that there will be a second surge of the coronavirus and Sen. Chuck Grassley announced he would introduce legislation to protect inspectors general as he seeks answers on two firings from last month.
Trump's attempts to suggest the US has effectively beaten coronavirus are belied by reports that almost half the states are experiencing an increase in cases.
His push to return to the campaign trail in Tulsa, Oklahoma, is widely regarded as endangering public health.
Trump's tone-deaf response to the death of George Floyd -- most notably a photo-op of Trump holding a Bible outside of St. John's church -- has been roundly criticized. "Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people," said former Defense Secretary James Mattis.
Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton's memoir suggests Trump sought the help of the Chinese president in his 2020 reelection race and approved of the use of concentration camps by China. Bolton said that Trump is not "fit for office" and doesn't have "the competence to carry out the job."
CNN's latest national poll shows Trump trailing former Vice President Joe Biden by 14 points.
Trump likes to insist that he does best when people are counting him out. Now's his chance to prove it -- because digging out of the hole he has made for himself will be a massive task.
