The Case for Reparations
Atlantic ^ | JUNE 2014 | TA-NEHISI COATES

Two hundred fifty years of slavery. Ninety years of Jim Crow. Sixty years of separate but equal. Thirty-five years of racist housing policy. Until we reckon with our compounding moral debts, America will never be whole.

Scott Adams has had a brilliant insight about the demand for reparations

Whenever Democrats push race to the forefront of the news, reparations pop up. The theory is that, because their forebearers were kidnapped from Africa and enslaved in America, blacks will never catch up economically to whites. It doesn’t matter that there are no slaves or slaveowners today; that most whites are not descended from slaveowners; or that racism impoverished, rather than enriched the South.

Scott Adams’ brilliant insight cuts through all this: The comparison isn’t between black wealth and white wealth in America. Instead, the comparison must be the difference between black’s average net worth in America versus black’s average net worth in Africa. After all, the act of stealing blacks from Africa is the “but for cause” of all wrongs done to blacks.....

Juneteenth is the official date the US government told former slave owners that the millions of dollars in human capital they owned had now been nationalized, and they wouldn’t receive a dime in compensation.

Didn't care about this issue till a few years ago, and it occurred to me to wonder how the US government got around the 5th amendment which requires payment for any property taken. It also requires "due process".

"...nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

Taking their property with no court hearings? How does that work? Isn't that illegal?

Did they have to destroy the constitution in order to save it?

40 ounces of beer and a cadillac.

this guy sounds like a character from star trek. Duh black community owes the rest of productive america reparations for destroying neighboorhoods, language, music, movies, sports, schools, etc.

Reparations would have the same effect on the US economy as on the German economy after WWI. And the top Democrats understand this.

What happens when African Americans get their reparations check and it won't buy anything? And meanwhile everyone with money in the bank has their savings wiped out?

It's not an "unintended consequence".

Don’t forget to mention the territory exempt from the Emancipation Proclamation. Slavery existed in these areas until the 13th Amendment was ratified.

It’s just a free money grab - kind of like the looters who take advantage of the protests to grab free stuff.

As I’ve reiterated elsewhere, my ancestors arrived in America after the civil war. We did not enslave anyone and were not farmers so didn’t employ any sharecroppers. One of the 1940 census forms lists a “domestic worker” in the household, who presumably was paid for her labor. So I have trouble understanding why my tax $$ should pay reparations for someone else’s crime.

You are absolutely correct, but I regarded pointing this out as having a high probability of being confusing without adding anything to the essential point.

Have you yet come around to my way of thinking regarding the means by which they ratified the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments?

Same thing with my ancestors. They arrived in the US around 1900 or so, didn't settle in any of the confederate states, and never had anything to do with any of it.

Why are so many Hispanics speaking the language of their conquerors & enslavers? How many did Pizarro kill?

If I am not mistaken, “separate but equal” had that great deal of support from blacks. They got to have their own schools and even professional sports leagues like baseball’s Negro leagues.

Agreed. Anyone accepting a check for reparations automatically and forever renounces their U.S. citizenship and agrees to move to Ghana since Ghana has extended an offer of acceptance.

He should start in Africa where his ancestors were captured and sold into slavery by other Africans.

Had a discussion with a liberal friend of mine about this very subject recent. It is his view that the government declaration amounted to recognizing what had falsely been claimed to be property was actually a person and that people could not be owned, thus no compensation had to be made. Since people could not be owned, anyone ever claiming to have owned people was in error and due no compensation.

Anyone who has been shortchanged from an earned opportunity due to affirmative action programs should also be entitled to reparations.

While in the military, I lived in a lot of different countries around this earth and this country, our country, is the least racist and bigoted of all of the countries I have lived in.

Now we have a bunch of thugs who want to burn it down, steal others property, and ignore the laws of the land just because they believe everything should be handed to them and they should not have to work for it.

BULL SHIT.

Everyone behind you had to work for what they have why should you be different.

I believe in the rule of law. Break the law pay the price and I do not give one damn who you are.

We have a constitution that we abide by. We have laws that we follow.

The left has their PC code of communist doctrine that must be ignored or overcome with what ever amount of force that is necessary.

How is it that the left believes that this can just go on and in the end they will get their way? That is not going to happen.

CWII should be everyone’s worst nightmare and I want no part of it, but I will be forced into it if our constitution is threatened from outside of our country or from inside of our country through extra legal means.

The 150,000+ strong, much experienced battle/combat vets in this country will not all just sit on the bench and watch what we have fought for be taken from us. We are overwhelmingly right or center right and have already taken and oath to protect our constitution and that oath has no expiration date.

So far in all of the rioting, looting, arson, and anarchy the right has not even stepped onto the playing field. The left has been fighting themselves.

The opposition team will step up to bat when we see fit to do so and the left has no say in that decision. When we do we have our own rules and do not and will not pay any attention to the beliefs, desires, or wants, or PC demands of the left.
