I think the point was that his wife was speaking on HIS behalf, for HIS campaign, and he couldn’t even bother to act interested or grateful. That isn’t exactly the kind of understanding that ‘makes friends and influences people’.

Isn’t it an ongoing shame that true objective journalism is dead? They can’t fit any more loaded, biased, personal opinion words into a paragraph than this. Not saying I am for or against the candidate or his actions.
