I constantly wonder the same thing, because the reality of our financial situation is that we are on the precipice of oblivion. The debt (thanks in large part to the same congress’ refusal to stand firm on the debt limit) is exploding, now running at an annual deficit of over TWO TRILLION dollars, and accelerating. At the same time there is a concerted effort by our adversaries to abandon the dollar as the global reserve currency. They see the U.S. severely wounded and are trying to administer the kill shot. Those two combined, if not stopped immediately by drastic cuts to federal spending, will first cause worsening financial chaos followed by the U.S effectively becoming Venezuela as investor trust in the “full faith and credit of the U.S. government” crumbles. A nation that allows runway inflation to destroy the value of its currency is not a nation worthy of investment. But the do-nothings don’t seem to care so long as their personal gravy train keeps rolling (temporarily).

It is burning down, whether or not McCarthy is Speaker. McCarthy, and almost every other politician in America, has done nothing in their entire life except lay dry kindling all around and play with matches.
Kevin McCarthy has announced he will not run for Speaker again.
The speaker’s chair is not vacant. Rep. McHenry occupies the seat as Speaker pro tem.
McCarthy’s was always a Swamp Creature, let’s hope the new guy is better!

I would be happy to see the republican House govern like a democrat run House. When democrats have just The House they tend to set the agenda. The democrats would be kicking booty like they did under Trump with just The House. Republicans suck!
