I know this is just an anecdote, but two of my kids’ friends moved back to MA from CA. They both worked for one of the big tech companies, and had been for several years.

By moving from Silicon Valley to Central and Western MA, their cost of living dropped like a rock. Their work from home salaries were adjusted by about 15%. So, the guy working for X was making $400,000 a year took a slight pay cut…but his net income soared.

In both cases, these 30 something’s cashed out options and paid cash for their new homes.

The salaries for some of these tech folks is just astounding. If you do it for a few years your stock options make you a multimillionaire.

When I was growing up in the 1960s in the South, it was common to buy a new 1000 sqft house on a medium lot. The houses were rectangular to save on costs. It was a starter home. The expectation was that when you had kids (3-5 kids was the norm), you either moved or added to the house. If you go into those neighborhoods of my youth, not one if them will look alike, because all of them now have additions put on them.

With the rise of the internet, there is little reason to have large cities. There is plenty of room for medium size lots in small towns.

We have 10 year 80,000.00 pick-up trucks now. Wont be long till they are 150,000.00 and 20 year loans.

Such trends can't last. Trucks are becoming more expensive while complexity and repairs are increasing and life is decreasing. This is ALL due to government mandates.

I'm not that old, but not that long ago, simple, aspirated pick-ups running on sulfur diesel would easily last 300K miles and could be repaired by almost anyone. I remember my uncle, who was farmer, had one that ran for over 500K (and that's in the upper midwest, where the bodies rusted out first)
