WWII would still be going on if fought the same way America has been fighting wars since 1945.

Western governments have been using war as a political weapon with no attempt to end the conflict by winning.

I thought the Houthis were basically fighting with sticks and shovels. Who knew they had this capability?

The threat was brought up a few weeks ago. Some of the cables aren’t a great depth. I don’t think cutting an undersea cable requires very sophisticated tech if the cable’s depth is shallow and its location is known. The Brits cut German cables the first days of WWI, but they did use specialized ships to do it.

The article mistakenly conflates the Houthis with the recognized gov’t of Yemen. The Houthis don’t even control the land adjacent to the narrowest part of the the strait / sea passage, but, they CAN get missiles, drones (air and sea) there.

Good background article for those who want to know how this all developed:

A lot of FReepers want the parties mostly affected by the Houthis' bad behavior to be defending cargo ships and such. (Not that the fallout won't affect the US quite badly if this continues, but we are not the immediate main victim.)

Problem is, none of those parties have significant capacity. In particular, who else has several vessels with the capabilities of the USA's Arleigh-Burke destroyers? You can't just snap your fingers and come up with a dozen. Even the US has sent only 4, of which at any one point there may be only 3 on station, as the destroyers need to make supply runs to re-arm, or so I read. (Not being able to re-arm at sea seems like a huge liability, but then again, I can see how it could be quite dicey.)

However, one doesn't need anywhere close to a A.B. destroyer to interdict arms & parts shipments. The Houthis can really only get them by sea or MAYBE by air. That little Coast Guard Cutter the US has running around in the area is plenty sufficient for blockade purposes, and I have to believe the Euros and friends have plenty of such ships. Why isn't the area flooded with them?
