Read #65.

That is exactly what will come out of this ruling.

Appeals Court Rules That Cops Can Physically Make You Unlock Your Phone

...And yet courts repeatedly release criminals back into society to victimize people again. Why is this country such a train wreck right now?

He was a parolee. No warrant is needed.

The parolee give up some rights, not ALL rights.
The condition of submission to searches is not without constraint.
In this case, the forced use of a ‘fingerprint’ to open the phone was, IMO, simply wrong. They had him in custody. As a former LEO...time is on our side. No reason not to get a warrant.

For iPhone fingerprint reader (older) or “Face ID” (newer): “hard lock” it. (2-button quick press). For Face ID keep eyes closed...(hard to do)...better to just hard lock the phone which then requires the pass code to unlock it (make the pass code more than 4 numbers for added security).

When I was going to school in the 1950s the biggest threat a teacher could use was “this will be on your permanent record”. Of course back then were few “permanent records”. Fast forward to today, not only can a “permanent record” exist, a person creates their own, via their smart phones and social media all easily accessed by authorities looking for a crime they can charge you with.

I seem to remember that this has already been to SCOTUS (the forcible use of biometrics to unlick phones without a warrant) .

Use a passcode. They can’t force it out of you, well, legally, anyway.

You said your iPhone is unlocked by pass code only; not thumbprint nor facial ID because cops can access parolees’ phones without warrants.
