I have an even better idea - Separation of School and State.

That is absolutely the goal. However, in the mean time, there is nothing stopping prayer in schools, provided it is not advanced by the school program, administration or employees. Students may pray, and the sincere ones do. Teachers may pray, and the sincere ones do. Administration may pray, and the sincere ones do. It only becomes an issue when someone isn't satisfied with allowing each individual to choose for themselves. They seek to make it a part of the officially endorsed program so that those who would not pray on their own are pulled into the participation. It is a political maneuver to advance religion, not a religious issue to protect the faithful.

No one is saying the government has to help Jesus. Even the Bible advocates their separation (which, ironically, is why we separate government from Church in the first place--because the Bible says we should). What government should NOT do is restrict the rights of people to worship and evangelize in their schools and workplaces. Are we really so weak that we need laws to protect us from other people's opinions? If I pray to God right in front of you, how are you really damaged? I don't think we should be passing laws to prevent people from feeling uncomfortable. Laws prohibiting free expression of Christian beliefs (they don't usually affect anyone else) are basically thought control.

Why not have a "moment of silence"? Then people can do whatever they want.

If they can do whatever they want, let them make noise.

Agreed.

Are we really so weak that we need laws to protect us from other people's opinions? I don't think we should be passing laws to prevent people from feeling uncomfortable.

You are correct, there is no right to not be offended. I strongly support religious liberty. It is an unalienable right.

If I pray to God right in front of you, how are you really damaged?

Unless you are a government official 'on the clock', I wouldn't be damaged at all. Please feel free to pray in front of me or anyone else.

Laws prohibiting free expression of Christian beliefs (they don't usually affect anyone else) are basically thought control.

Again I agree. But then prayers initiated and led by public school teachers are also a form of thought control.

No one is saying the government has to help Jesus.

This is where I strongly disagree. There is most certainly a very strong movement to entangle government with religion. Why is Pat Robinson so popular? Right here on this thread there are people advocating government lead prayer in schools. Go ask AndyPappy.

NOW that the President has called us to prayer..... NOW that Congress has called us to prayer..... NOW that our Governor has called us to prayer.... NOW that the city Mayor has called us to prayer.... NOW that the media and most other branches of our American society have called us to prayer..... AND NOW that our churches are assembling in special prayer.... Honorable Justices of the Supreme Court, I have only one question... Would it be O.K. to pray in our schools? - Forwarded by a GOPN&V reader

Just a question...

Is anyone here suggesting that people would not pray unless the GOVERNMENT called them to prayer?

I've never understood the mentality of people who gain great joy from being called to prayer by an "authority".

God Is Back

When I saw the title, my first reaction was "He never left." hehe, I was delighted to see that point made in the second sentence of this wonderful post.

Thank you so much.

You anti-freedom types are so misguided. Do you think the American flag in the auditorium is forced indoctrination?

Thanks for changing the subject. You're the one who wants to force me and mine to join you in prayer.
I wasn't talking about the flag.

Now do you understand, you fear-mongering liberal?

Right. Tell me how requiring prayer to YOUR idea
of god in public schools will make this situation better.

I'm not aware of anyone who wants to "force" you to pray, as if that were possible. They want the freedom to pray for themselves. The fact that you find other people praying offensive is your problem.

Strange that people who "forgot" about God never forget about the allmighty dollar with "In God We Trust" on it.

God Bless America!

As an ordained minister of the gospel and pastor of a local church, I do not agree with the indictment of God by Falwell and Robertson. However, God is sovereign and for some purpose He has allowed this evil to be perpetrated on our society.

At the same time, let me suggest to you that the evil within the hearts of those in this nation who perform and support the murder of some one million babies each year through abortion, is no different than the evil that murdered thousands at the World Trade Center.
