USO Canteen Freeper Style

War has come to our shores. It was committed on American soil.  We have been able to live in Freedom only because of those who have fought in the past wars giving life, limb and all the sacrifices for us to live in Freedom and go about our day without fear.

On September 11, 2001, that comfort, that feeling of living in a land that would not be attacked ended.

William T. Sherman said it succinctly, "War is hell."

The day has come for this Nation and its people to understand that there is a risk in losing its freedom, and in reality there always has been. We have ONLY stayed free because of the sacrifices of our military, our warriors.

This is about saving the future of America. Aristotle said, "We make war that we may live in peace."

We are seeing the American Flag flying at homes now more than ever in my lifetime. We are seeing the American Flag flying on vehicles and people wearing Flag pins and small Flags on their clothes. America is united in the cause for Freedom and for our country to WIN against the evil that came upon our land to kill and hurt us. To change our way of life and to destroy America which is US, you and me. To take away our precious Freedom.

This is the Freeper version of the USO Canteen. Where soldiers could come and feel a small part of being at home. It is a place where you that have family in the military can post a thought to a loved one that might be able to read it far away from home. A place where we that support our military can help support them, post to them, fun graphics showing the price in America and our troops. Poems, quotes, cartoons, or articles of how America is behind our troops.

Those in our military are our Nation's warriors. Let us join hands, fly our Flag and let the world know how important our warriors are to us....And that our MILITARY, our Warriors, are America's TRUE HEROS!

"No Marine was ever honored for what they received. Honor was the reward for what they gave." (Anonymous) CHIEF gave his all in many ways. He touched our lives and his friendship meant so much to all of us. He will live in our hearts forever, and his friendship will always be a bright and shining memory in our hearts and souls.

Seeing that Hunting License makes me think. I have a special message for all our young ( and old ones, too!)troops who are Midwest Natives. Pheasant Season opens in Iowa on Saturday morning. A prolonged wet spring made for a poor hatch. There are fewer Pheasant out here in farm country than there have been in 30 years. None the less, the hunters will be out in full force on Saturday and Sunday. If you want to hunt with my crew you have to dress your own birds and I will provide the ziplocks.

Virginian encourages letter-writing campaign to troops

MICHELLE BRUMMITT
The News & Advance

^An AP Member Extra

LYNCHBURG, Va. _ Tom Sparhawk still smiles when he remembers a package he received during the Vietnam War. He was in the Air Force and stationed in England as a weather observer for four years.

``I got a newspaper, a gift and cards,'' said Sparhawk, who is now a sociology professor at Central Virginia Community College. ``It was neat. I was in a particularly homesick time, and I really appreciated it.''

Now Sparhawk is encouraging others to write letters to members of the military _ particularly those serving in the Persian Gulf region. He is coordinating booths in the school's student center where people can write holiday cards to send to American troops serving around the world.

Sparhawk is adviser for Phi Theta Kappa, an honors fraternity at the college, which sent letters to the military each of the last 10 years. Last year, they sent 501 cards through ``Friends of Our Troops,'' a North Carolina organization that distributes thousands of cards collected from around the country.

Some people write a paragraph, some write a poem. Some correspondents send their message anonymously, while others include photos and a return address.

``The response from the people at our school was amazing,'' said Suzanne Brown, a math education major who helped write cards last year. ``We got more cards than we could get people to sign. I think there will be even more response this year because people are patriotic-minded.''

``There's no way for American citizens to understand the importance of getting mail from home. It's indescribable,'' said Brown, whose husband and son served in the military.

``It's nice to feel appreciated, because military people make a lot of sacrifices. They spend a lot of time away from their families.''

She wrote more than 25 letters last year during the group's card drive.

``I try to keep it nonpersonal. I say thank you for a job well done, thanks for continuing to maintain our freedom,'' she said. ``These are the people out there protecting us every day, even when they're not in the news.''

The group has collected more than 125 letters so far this year.

``I tell them that we are with you in prayer, and that I think about them every day of the week,'' said Phi Theta Kappa president Dee Lucy. ``I say 'Keep your spirits high and your faith strong.'''

The group is seeking donations of new cards for students to sign as well as signed cards from members of the community.

``It's such a nice program we'd love it if people in the community would participate with us,'' Sparhawk said.

Organizations that send letters to ``Friends of Our Troops'' help pay for postage of the letters overseas. Since the cards are sent en masse through Priority Mail, groups send a check to help cover costs rather than stamping each piece.

Once cards are sent to ``Friends of Our Troops,'' they separate them so cards from one locality will be sent to numerous military installments.

Saw your show Dec 1972 in Singapore on the Carrier Midway CVA-41. You had Roman Gabriel and a not so good juggler with you. You told a joke about shark fin soup. You asked for more ... the waiter looked at your nose and said you had enough.

Thanks for the memories Bob

I saved that picture!
Everytime some peacenik posts on this forum, I'm going to post that picture!
It infuriates me that some think we should give quarter to these murders!
If I could say what I really think, I'd make a D.I.'s ears turn red.
I have saved it too! And "Dittos" from Rowlett, Texas!

Especially of pretty ladies ... like you. BTW the shark fin soup joke was told by Bob. Also Bob and his wife finished the show by singing "White Christmas" and had us all join in.
