MADRID (Reuters) - Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev said on Thursday the victims of the September 11 attacks in the United States will not have died in vain if world leaders use the crisis to create a new world order.
These victims will not be in vain if the world reflects and looks at itself in the mirror,'' Gorbachev told a news conference in Madrid, where he was attending a conference.
If we act as we did (after September 11), uniting efforts of fighting against terrorism, if we maintain the coalition, we will not only prevent a new Cold War, but we could get a new world order that is so desirable for all of us.''
More than 5,000 people were killed in last month's U.S. suicide hijackings on New York and Washington. The U.S. government says its prime suspect, Saudi-born dissident Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), is hiding in Afghanistan
Gorbachev, who took over as Soviet leader in 1985 and oversaw the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan four years later, expressed support for President Bush (news - web sites).
He said the campaign against Afghanistan was not a ``war'' but rather a strike against terrorist organizations.
You can only defeat Afghanistan by destroying it as a nation and that would be a crazy plan,'' he said.
Gorbachev said any post-Taliban political system in Afghanistan should reflect the country's ethnic composition and that the United Nations (news - web sites) should consider sending peace forces
Today, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) stated that the deaths of 6,000 Americans will not have been in vain if a new world order is created in her vision of one, big, global village and if she is proclaimed Queen of the World.
I do loathe these people.
Trouble is, I'm sure it will be just that.
Look at the way this administration is ensuring Legal Abortion in any land to which it sends its female soldiers (and shrimp pilots who need not meet minimum height requirements) to invade.
"In a different context, the Russians may be expected to provoke an incident unattributable to themselves involving the explosion of a nuclear device somewhere in the West not excluding the United States. The purpose would be to reassert or re-emphasise the necessity for the American-Russian partership now, and to create pressure for eventual World Government." - Anatoliy Golitsyn 1989
