The plane was supposed to take off at 8 AM and was delayed an hour while they checked out possible engine trouble.

It wasn't too long ago the Airbus was in the news....I found this from last May.

------------------

LONDON, May 30 (Reuters) - Airlines must alter thrust reversers on Airbus A300 airliners to ensure they do not deploy in flight, an occurrence that could easily destroy the plane, the European aircraft manufacturer said on Wednesday.

Aviation regulators had required an extra safety mechanism after reviewing an 1998 incident in which a thrust reverser, which helps the brakes to stop the plane on landing, deployed in flight, an Airbus spokeswoman said. The Korean Air plane landed safely.

``The incident led us to take immediate precautionary measures at the time, to recommend that airlines not use the thrust reversers,'' she said.

The Airbus spokeswoman said that even before the latest fix, the A300 had had two mechanisms designed to prevent unintended thrust-reverser operation.

Major A300 customers have included United Parcel Service Inc., FedEx Corp., AMR Corp.'s American Airlines and Thai Airways International Plc.

Either terrorist or "only" mechanical failure, this will spike consumer confidence in air travel. Stocks are down broadly (but have come up off early lows). Hardest hit seem to be airlines, Disney, GE, Honeywell (just from a quick scan, mind you).

I would expect the terrorist angle to be downplayed until definitive proof exists one way or the other, in order not to further spook markets and consumers.

Lest I forget, prayers out to the lost souls and their families.

Can't we reinstate Michael Rivero just for a few days? I have to admit that his paranoia and conspiracy theories were entertaining.

The thing that makes me think that this may not be terrorist related is that the explosion occured shortly after takeoff. The vast majority of catastrophic engine and structural failures occur at this time when the plane is climbing on full power. Had the explosion occured at cruising altitude, I'd be much more suspicious.

Had this occured before 9/11, the general reaction would have been "how tragic". As it is, there appears to be almost universal consensus that this was a Bin Laden job. 9/11 has completely undermined the common sense and mental equilibrium of most. Now tell me again who's winning the war?

This event when viewed in light of recent terrorist attacks (9/11) cannot be assumed to be coincidence. In the intelligence community, there are no such things as coincidences.

Our local abc news affiliated just reported that the US Coast Guard has recovered large portions of the plane from Jamacia bay. This would point to the plane breaking apart in mid-air.

Does it bother anyone else that this happened in Mike Moran's neighborhood? Maybe it's just coincidence, but Moran's statement inspired courage in the face of terrorism - thereby making him a target.

It would make sense, I think. I hope I'm wrong, and if I am, I'll see if I can post a picture with my tinfoil hat on.

I just woke up and heard all this was going on..and to hear that Bush and whoever are still going to his ranch in Crawford, TX. Everything will go on as it was planned! Mustn't frighten the sheeples!! Bush! You are fiddling while Rome burns!!! You keep trying to lie to the people because you think calm is more important than to tell the people the very evident truth!!! WE AREN'T LITTLE DEMONRAT SHEELPLE/CHILDREN THAT NEED TO BE LED BY LIES!!!

I have been up about 10 mins, and one look at Queens told me that plane exploded in the air, with no warning from the crew..the crew apparently weren't reporting problems of any kind nor did any cock pit talking before the sound went indicate there was a problem!!! It exploded most likely due to a terrorist attack!!! Yet for now...the government has ruled terrorism out!!! You can't do that after what we've been through since 9/11!!! The least you can do is call it a possible terrorist attack until it's proven to be an accident!!! By almost immediately ruling out terrorism when we know darn well it probably is terrorism, you open yourself and your administration up to the people of this country distrusting you!!! Don't be like a clinton and stop treating us like kids!!! We need a leader! Not a big brother or father!!!

All they have to say is..there is a chance it's terrorism but there is also a chance it's an accident. I get so tired of them lying to us! </>rant

The White House spokesman declined to rule terrorism in or out as a possible cause of the crash but said he would not dispute the assessment of U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, who said there was no preliminary evidence of terrorism.

Actually, there's tons of preliminary evidence that it was a bomb and absolutely no preliminary evidence that it was an accident.

These people had better not dare to start to cover this up.

Scads of people saw and explosion and the engine and debris fall off, there is video footage of the engine lying on the ground intact away from the crash site.

The strange thing is that the Administration, at least, is saying they have no evidence one way or the other while the usual suspects say all the usual preposterous things.

I think it exploded because of Bush's tax cuts.....that's what Hillary will say. And the lovely Chelsea will say that they will have no money to clean up the debris because of Bush's tax cuts. And BJ will say that we had been bad to the Dominicans...no...no...we were bad to the Irish..."Irish Need Not Apply"...that's it...that's why this plane exploded.

I never read CNN or believe CNN's words.

Others may discover why someday.

I suppose the Dems are going to say that Bush had this plane blown-up to cover the report that he "stole the election."

The part that doesn't make sense is why the vertical stabilizer was pulled from Jamaica Bay while the failed engine was found much further along the flight path on dry land? If the crash was due to the engine separating it would be the first thing to hit the ground. I'm beginning to believe something (explosion?) damaged the fuselage and debris caused the engine to explode and separate.

I thought there was a report that part of the wing also sheared away. It would make me wonder if there was an Islamic maintenance man messing round with the under side of the wing. They have not been fired from their jobs yet have they?
